Have '96 850 that is intermittently sticking in high gear when starting from a stop.
Does not do it all the time. Putting in reverse sometimes corrects.
Symptoms are similar to those described when the low-gear arrow flashes on the dash putting tran in limp home mode, HOWEVER, arrow does not flash. In fact, arrow never comes on, even when trans is in L or 2. CEL is not on, so no codes to check.
Backup lights come on when put in reverse, so would not seem to be PNP switch.
Have tried 20 times P -> L shift to clean PNP switch contacts.
Econ/sport/winter mode switch has no obvious effect in Winter mode. Have ordered new mode select switch, but am puzzled that arrow does not come on in L.
I know this topic has been discussed in context of PNP switch, but wonder if anyone else has seen symptoms like mine.
I guess next step if mode sel switch does not fix problem is to replace PNP.
Any additional thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hummm...doesn't really make sense other than possibly a real internal issue? You stated now arrow flash? and I assume no console switch flash either?...did you try and have the codes read? on a 96 you need the proper scan tool for that....maybe that will help?

Sounds like the bulb might be burnt out for the arrow....
My car (though a 1994) did the exact same thing. The usual suspect would be pnp. Mine turned out to be solenoids. It would not shift into first or second from a start...usually would when cold, but often not when at temp. Transmission flush helped for a while...finally had to replace solenoids. I did however get a code for s2 solenoid....
A transmission flush and codes would definitely help narrow the problem.
One thing I noticed when mine was failing was that the transition to reverse was very rough when the lower gears weren't working...almost like a jerking.
