Hello i just went to a shop and they said my cv boots are cracked and leaking now my question is should i replace the axle like they say or just the boots because the car has 170,000 94 850 turbo and i want to know the best route to go and how much should a job like that go including labor because i dont know if the axles have evr been replaced and i dont know if the axles go bad on these cars. If anybody can help i appreciate it

they are the rubber boots that cover the CV (Constant Velocity) joint and CV axle.

sometimes when the boot tears dirt gets in the grease causing the cv joint to grind or click, when this happens u should replace the cv shaft. if its just a torn boot and nothing is wrong with the joint then just replace boot. check into aftermarket shafts like gkn. should be cheaper than volvos, i think gkn might be volvos oem brand.

If the joints are in good condition it's probably better to replace just the boots. That's because the original joints are usually of vastly higher quality than anything you can buy to replace them, and more likely to continue to last even with 170K.

Like Tom just stated ...I hardly ever have axle failure, the C.V's are very strong on the Volvo's and most other European vehicles. Now if it was a Japanese car I would say replace the axles(seriously). But if their not noisy just do the boots

Hello to every one.
Last week I replace the boot on Right hand side AXLE. The main reason was that my wife was saying that she notice some knocking noise when she was doing deep left or right turn. The inspection shows split CV boot.
After replacing it, she mentioned yesterday that the noise is still there under the same conditions.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? If the answer is CV joint then can I buy it from somewhere or I have to replace the whole shaft.

Nick, If the CV was already making noise, then the joint was contaminated by dirt from the torn boot. By replacing the boot, you haven't cured that problem.
To the original poster, I put in a replacement passenger side axle from Raxles last night. Cost me $165 and 90 minutes of my time (would have been 60 if I had bothered to drag my neighbours air compressor over). While on the phone to the Volvo dealer today on another matter, I asked them to quote me for the same job. They wanted 3 hours labor ($300) and $502.63 for the part. I'm glad I wasn't at the parts counter in person, because I'm not sure I could have kept a straight face.....
