The lesson here is replace it if it has been a while, because it may come out like this:

BTW, the part cost me about $10, and took me about 20 minutes to replace because the screws were on there really tight!

Rich, when I put the new one in, i just put it in without looking at the way it was turned in the housing...that's okay right?...didn't turn it to face any particular way!

I got the 87 degree one for my turbo.....made by Vernet...

yep I just did mine as well- I was in a pinch so I went w/ 90 degree genuine Volvo from the dealer. I was told by many sources that the little "bleeder valve" on the Tstat had to be towards the front of the car. If you look @ the write-up on the main site I think you can see what I'm talking about there. Not sure if it's a huge deal, but it could be something.

The bleeder should be the at the highest point, which is facing forward.

the bleeder valve is that little loose thing on the ring of the tstat right?...i better get in there tomorrow evening and make sure I did that....

I drove from San Diego to LA today with the new tstat, and no problems....130 miles....but I'm gonna check it anyway to be sure it's positioned right...thanks guys...

How did you decide on the 87 vs 90 degree t-stat? Also, did you/do you recommend changing the coolant?

I thought the 90C was for NA cars.

It's always a good idea to change out the coolant whenever you have the system open. Cheap insurance.

I got the 87 degree because that's what the dealer and Rich recommended for a turbo....I did not flush the coolant because it was flushed about 2 months ago anyway...i did have to top it off though since i lost alot in the process....

if you haven't flushed the coolant in about a year, then this would be a good time to do it...flush it out, replace the tstat, and refill the coolant....

The long-shank T40 torx bit can be hard to find...no one in my little town could even order one. I got mine from mcmaster.com.
