My 1999 S80 has developed a tapping valve. My check engine light is on and indicates there is an air leak somewhere. Could the two be related??
Has anyone ever had this problem??
Where can I start looking??

Are you sure it's a tapping valve or is it a tapping sound that sounds like it's valve tap?

If you plan on doing the work yourself, try fixing the air leak and see if the tap is still there. I know with vacuum lines, if the leak is bad enough, I have followed the hissing sound when poking around under the hood with the car running. Also, the 850/S70 has some elbow issues listed in the Repair/Maintenance section here that may also apply to your S80.

Suggest getting the code read at a Checker's Auto or similar for free. Let us know what it says and we'll see if we can help. Then we'll worry about the tap.

I had the code checked and it was a vacuume canister leak. My mechanic said I had to have a smoke test done so he could see where the leak comes from.

Yes. He said that I might have a faulty valve. But I think he wants to find the leak first and then explore the posibility of a damaged valve.

If your tapping noise sounds like it's coming from under the spark plug cover, that would be the lifters, and it's common for the Oil pan O rings to need replacing. This will correct lack of oil to the upper part of the cylinder head.

its its more of a clicking then a tapping its probably your lifters. get an oil change and you should be ok.

well since you just changed your oil i wouldnt recommend chaning your pan right now. im pretty sure it just calls for you to drain the oil, and unscrew a few bolts that hold the pan. then it just comes off. shouldnt be too too difficult. i could be wrong though. you can drive with a lifter tick, no big problem there. you can also try autorx, www.auto-rx.com, people have had alot of success with that from what ive read and heard. good luck.

I fuond the problem!!! biggrin.gif There was oil on my engine around the dip stick area. When my mechanic changed my oil he must have removed the teflon tape I had around the O ring area to make a snug fit. Below the dipstick handle is an O ring and the plastic around there is missing (broken) so I wrapped teflon tape around the o ring and made a secure fit. I never looked in my engine compartment till this afternoon. I put teflon tape back on and two quarts of oil and the tapping is gone! wink.gif

Thank you for all your combined help.

So the cause of your tapping is running low on Oil. wink.gif

OK lets turn this into a learning experience. If you ever have what you think is lifter or top end noise, first change the oil, second, check the level and make sure it's correct after the oil change. wink.gif

You may also want to inform your mechanic of how much oil is required ?
