Alright, so tonight I got in a fight with my, well, friend I guess you could call her. I did something dumb and beat on my car like I know I shouldnt. Well, its driving fine, sounds normal, all my fluids are fine. But when I turned my car back on my service light was on. The only thing I came up with was this.

Check engine light is on cause there are codes stored, meaning something is wrong and needs to be looked at.

Service light is on because you have went 5K or 12 months without reseting the service light, something that is normally done when a service is done by a repair facility.

Now my car gets serviced regularly. But the guy I bring it to, who is a volvo certified mechanic, doesnt have the diagnostics machine. Can he, or i for that matter, reset it with a regular OBD-II reader? Sorry if this is a repeat question, its late, im tired, and also worried about my car.

Edit: I also gave, and always do give, my care a cool down idel period after driving her hard. me= monkey.gif

I believe you need the Volvo reset tool, and a regular OBD-II code reader won't be able to reset it.

I got tired of dealing with the service light on my 98' and didn't want to shell out any coin on a reset tool, so I took about 30min. out of my day and pulled the bulb. Bye Bye service light! biggrin.gif 98's are a pain with the service light!

Just to be crystal clear. The 'service engine light' and the 'check engine light' are two completely different messages.

The "service engine light" is completelty routine and just a notification that maint. is due based on Volvo's mileage schedule. no worries.

The "check engine light" means there is a problem that needs to be dealt with. worries

Autozone will read/clear your 'Check Engine' codes for you at no charge. If the problem persists, the light will come back on any you will need to take action on whatever code was read.
