The S70 T5 (black) that I bought needs new tires. I figure as long as I'm getting new tires, I might as well get new wheels. Basically it's between 17" Pegs and 18" Pegs. I was looking at tires, and the tires for 18" wheels cost about 50% more. While 17" tires cost about the same as the stock 16" tires. Plus I don't know if I will ever be able to lower the car with 18"s.

To be honest, I don't like Volans. Especially on an s70. Take a look at a G35 Coupe. They have Volans, basically. Bleh. Moving on...

I really like the anthracite Canistos that someone here has, they look fantastic. But I'm not a painter.

Any other ideas? 17s or 18s?

that's Kevin w/ the Canistos, and they're definitely incredible wub.gif

as far as size I'd go w/ 17, mainly b/c 18's on our cars means a tire w/ a ridiculously short sidewall, and that will lead to rim damage if you hit a pothole or something (not to mention cheaper rubber)

My vote is for 18. 18" tires should not cost 50% more than the 17" counterpart. 215/40/18 or 225/35/18 or 225/40/18 should work without any problems. I think 18" just fill the opening so much better than 17" wheels, and the 17s just look a little small (IMO).

I have 18x8" in 225/35 tires and get no rubbing at all on my 850R (stock suspension). Once lowered, that will probably be another story, but the S70 has a little more clearance in the wheel-wells than the 850s.

If you are willing to have a little rub on lock of the steering wheel, then 18s will work, even once your car is lowered. If you absolutely do not want any rubbing, then go with 17".

I have an identical set up to Greg (yes, he copies me) and can confirm that 18" Pegs look great on an 850R. Again, no rubbing on the stock R suspension.

Have you thought about something like an OZ Superleggera? They don't make them anymore, but if you can track down a used set, that would be nice. They're 17's, very light, and look great.

Yup, there are lots of non-OEM options out there! If you could get the OZ's that Peter mentioned I think it would look great.

17" - the best of both worlds. You get a fairly big wheel that still has a decent top end.

That depends on the tire size and manufacturer/make of the tire. My Falken Ziex-512 in 215/40/17 gave an awful ride compared my Toyo T1-S 225/35/18.

As far as 18s (instead of 16" or 17") personally, I don't mind the slightly harsher ride, knowing that I am trading in ride comfort for increased handling.

On the same token of better handling you could just get wider 17's to compensate. But I have to agree, comparing 17's to 19's and 20's (not on volvos --- I've never been on 18's in any car) it is a very, very harsh difference espically with 20's.

can somebody elaborate on the ride harshness going from 16 to 17 to 18. right now i have stock 16' on my 98 s70t5 (w/ sport suspension), and i find that the ride is a _little_ hard. but take into consideration that i was driving a 91 xj6 before. the ride was smooth like a taxi.

will 18's be a huge difference in 'bumpiness' so to speak? i'm considering an upgrade to 17 volans or 18 pegs in the future.

Nebor, let me give you some advice from a different perspective:

1. If your considering doing something to the effect of the porsche brake kit down the road, there are limited choices in 17" wheels that will clear the brakes. If you go aftermarket I can not guarentee ANY that fit.

That being said, I'd recommened Moda R6 in 18x8's. They are sorta uncommon right now and always a good looking wheel on volvo's imo. Call a dealership see if you can order a set of 17" comets if you want to go factory... peggies look great but we ALL have them.

Otherwise, BBS, OZ and Ronal make nice looking rims and good quality ('cept maybe Ronal... never owned any).

If the porsche kit is not something you plan on considering, then 17's would be fine. Run a 225/40/17 for looks, or 215/45/17 for the correct size (abouts).

8" wide rims are very nice though imo.

I'm dead set on 18s now. 18s or bust. I'm thinking Anthracite pegs. I think all the non OEM wheels look a little bleh, personally. The modas are alright, but they just look cheap. Some of the BBS wheels are nice, but they all look busy.

I bet comets cost a million billion fafillion dollars too.

pegs are nice, i do prefer comets even though they are only available in 17s.

you might want to check out VMS. you'd probably have to import them from Japan, and i'm sure that isn't cheap. they are REALLY nice looking wheels though. check out StickThatClutch he has some on his car.

me and a couple other folks have been looking at these wheels. importing them might be spendy, but we might be able to cut down on costs if we do a group buy or something.

I'd still go with anthracite Comets ... wait for the next Volvo wheel rebate.
