I just got back from the dealer, three times today because the car is misfiring. The #2 and #4 cylinder was getting a misfire, along with another cylinder that wasn't identified. The dealership replaced the plugs, cap and rotor, and I still got the car to misfire afterwards. I would get the car to misfire when i was in 2nd gear and would stand on it hard.

I have a Jacobs ICE ignition, and Magnecor ignition wires, with the IPD ECU upgrade. When I was at the dealership, my mechanic was on the phone with a Volvo tech who told him to check the injector resistence, or that the turbo may be overboosting. The injector resistance was this:

#1 = 20.2 ohm
#2 - 4 = 20 ohm
#5 = 19.7 ohm.

The car never did this before, it started about 2 weeks ago, after I washed the engine. It may be nothing, but thats when the trouble seemed to start.

For everyone else who has upgraded their ignition, any sort of problems?

Does anyone make a performance cap/rotor for the Volvo?

I suppose I should upgrade the plugs to possibly the NGK ones.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Sounds like something still has moisture in it? Injectors all seem to be ohming normally....don't think too far into it..it's probably something simple..did you tell Volvo that you engine washed it and that's when the problem started? wink.gif

Dont upgrade your plugs to iridiums, use copper, they are the best for higher boost. Have you been gapping your spark plugs before installing them? For a chipped T5, they should be at .25

Misfires also can be caused by a bad ignition coil. Did you get the ignition coil wet? You can also check the ignition coil with an ohmmeter. If you have one begin by first removing the battery's neg. terminal. Then remove the ignition coil's wire. Then look down and look for two wires that attach to the ignition coil, and with an ohmmeter/metermeter touch both leads to both of the wires attached to the ignition coil (These the primary windings). The reading should be between 0.5 ohm and 1.5 ohms. Next test the secondary windings by touching one lead to the orginal wires going to the ignition and with the other lead touch the inside of the ignition coil's terminal (the one that attaches to the ignition coil's wire that goes to the engine). This reading should be 8-9 kohms.

just to eliminate one problem, i would bypass the jacobs and run stock ignition and see what happens. have heard of this problem with jacobs once.

my resistance is 8.5 between either of the wires to the coil (where the coil wire goes to the distributer).

i can't get a reading between the two wires on any setting though.

does this mean it's toast?

I've never known anyone with a Jacobs igniton box that ended up happy with it...no matter what make of car. If I were you that would be the first thing to bypass and see if the problem persists.
