Passengers side window switch works fine but when I lower the Pass window with the drivers side switch it only goes down and wont roll up. I then have to reach over and use the passswitch to close the window. could the switch be bad or just needs to be cleaned?

thanks
Leo

Might just be a dirty switch, if you can try cleaning it.

the master window control is in a terrible place (right under drink holder and such)
take it out and give it a good cleaning (especially around the contacts)

if that doesn't help you can score master window controls on ebay

The1998 master window switch is famous for needing to be replaced, I'd start there.

Mine went out on my 98. FCPgroton can get them. They don't have them listed, just send them an email. If I remember, it was around $80.

A six to seven year old car does have things that break, and With the Volvo it is no exception, lucky we know what most of them are, so it's easier to fix them.

It pays to scroll around here regularly on Volvospeed for sure!!
I note the question from Leo about the window switch and wouldn't you know it.... mine is squirrely also!

Got a 98 S70 and the LF window went down and wouldn't go up right away so I've left in place once it went up, pending an upcoming shop visit for timing belt which I prefer to leave to a pro.

My question is... can you give a few details on how to access the master window swithc and clean it? Seems like a straight forward procedure.

Yes retired Navy.

The switch is hard to get out without taking the door panel off so you can push it out, then you have to unclip the plastic that holds it all together. If you are patient and have a tool you can reach down below the switches with, you can hook it and pull up and work the switch out, you can also break it so it won't stay back together. Then if you are luck and none of the plastic that the metal tabs slide on is melted, you might be able to clean the contacts and bend them so they work correctly. Most I've torn apart are not worth fixin.

Thanks Bay 13. Current Seabee Chief here.
Wow.. looks like I may leave that window switch repair to someone else.
Remove the entire door panel... just to access a window switch.
Thanks for the insight and all you do here !

I have a tool I made so I can pull it out without taking the door off, however I destroyed a few with the learning curve, thats why I suggest taking the door panel off.

Hi, I am new to this site because I started to get issues with my 98 T5 the other day my driver's side window went down but didn't go back up. I saw that everyone is saying that it is the master switch but the thing about it is I would like to test it before buying a new part. Can someone provide me a way to test it, but can someone also recomnned where I can buy the part if I really need it.

The rear window guide is what usually causes that. Raise the window up all the way, and then shake the door and see if you can hear a rattle. I just replaced mine for the same problem, took some Pics will post this weekend in the Maintenance and repair section of this site. (Hopefully)
