I'had my 93 850 at the mechanics and checked all over the place. The car runs really well (when it runs) but shuts down all too often. I have posted before and tried suggestions of checking sensors on the MAF. I replaced the air filter, disconnected sensors while running to see if they were doing anything but still no fix. I replaced a little brass thing that opens up or closes the gate in the air flow and that didn.t work. Nothing appears on the diagnostic machine. Changed the fuel pump relay. No fix. I am determined to find the fault but I don't know what to do next. Ithought about the fuel pick-up in the tank. Could it be getting fouled?
I just hope someone out there can help me here

What's it doing when it shuts down? I'm having a sudden stalling problem while coasting to a stop, myself. It's completely random and always fires up after a few minutes. As a result, I now have a total fear of intersections. I've tried replacing the purge valve, the fuel filter, cleaning the throttle body and the IAC as well as new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I'll try replacing the ignition coil next. If you're experiencing the same thing as me, I would love to hear how you solve the problem. Other than this annoying and dangerous feature of my car, it drives strong and idles fine.

I would also check all connections in the engine bay. I had trouble with that the rubber isolaters that sits inside the connectors just went to crums and the wire just kinda lost support and disconnected itself. My problem was the relay that sits ontop of the fan and the car would just shut off for no reason and then start back up later as nothing had happend.

I have tried a different fuel relay, (the one on the fan shroud) and that didn't help at all. My next try is going to be checking the fuel pump. It did have a noise (like a humming sound) from it some time back but I think that might be normal, but I don't know. I won't risk driving in traffic any more because the risk is too great. I had one major scare on top of the others and that's enough of that.
All the connections have been checked and shaken up by hand. I do have a plug (2 or 3 pin) not connected on the battery side down low, but I am guessing that it is for the headlight washers/wipers which I don't give priority to just yet.
It would be good to know why the shut down occurs. I have posted on Matthews Volvo site and I'm still reading and watching for a fix. If I fix mine everyone will hear about it.

I had the same kind of problem in my '92 745.
I read the brickboard faq's for 740/940 and I found a note about driveability problems, like the car dying when coming to a stop, specially when turning the vehicle.
With nothing to loose but 30 min of my time, I tried what they recommened:
Clean all electrical connectors to all sensors: AMM, O2, RPM, etc.
Clean and tighten all ground connectors
Clean and tighten all connectors to the battery.
I did all this, and when I got to the small red wires that connect to the pos side of battery, I noted them to have green powder inside the crimpers and one the connector even broke off without much force.
I cut the corroded portion of the cable and installed a new connector and my problem was solved.
To make sense of this, all I could think is that there was a poor connection and high resistance at the small red wires, which happened to be the power for the fuel injectors.
So the injectors were not receiving enough juice, especially when slowing down and turning and the car would die.
Hey, you like me have nothing to lose but 30 min of your time. It might solve your problem.
Good luck
