I'm cheap and want to black out the stock grill. Someone has to have done this with some success. How do you get the paint to stick with out getting sand blasted off on the road?

many people use krylon fusion (i do)
just apply many many layers
and it will chip unless you get it professionally done

but for 4 bucks a can, fusion is the only way to go!

I have seen quite a few stock grilles painted. Got a few in the crew also. 8fiddy and Flyby. On Saturday I saw a red T5 wagon with the grille painted red. There used to be a red 850 R near my house with the same setup.

If you're going to use spraypaint, use Fusion.

I used Dupli-Color Textured Metalic Anthracite paint for the first coat, it's rubbery/flexible doesn't really need any prep work besides cleaning the grill. Then Krylon Fusion black paint on top. I did it last week so I don't know how well it will hold but I had my lower bumper grilles painted with that dupli-color paint and there was no visible domage after 6 months. What you're looking for is a flexible paint. Krylon Fusion paint isn't flexible by itself so I would suggest using it only for the top coat. by the way. that paint was invented for lazy people who don't wanna do a lot of prep work lol The grill is chromed so you need sticky/rubbery paint as the first coat.

If you put a little car wax or spray-on clear coat it will protect it from sun/weather damage a bit more than straight paint. Wax won't do much for rocks though. I never thought of using rubberized (if you can call it that? unsure.gif ) paint, that's a good idea!

i'm not sure what 8fiddy used to paint his. looks good though. you might not be able to tell in my sig pic, but he painted the chromed ring around the grille too.

About rock chips, mine looks like hell after this last winter and I'm too lazy to get a new IPD grille or fix mine up... maybe I will fix mine up with that rubber stuff though.
