When you install HID lights, the car thinks your bulbs are out because the HIDs run off of 35 watts, rather than 55 watts. Right?

So, how did you guys get around this? Wasn't there something to do with the relay? I can't seem to find the thread that contained that information.

It determines a bulb is out by measuring the draw difference between the left and right sides of the car. If the difference is high enough, the light comes on.
If you only put the HID in one headlight, it will trigger the light. If you put them in both, everything is balanced and no light, except on the road! smile.gif

This is a misnomer, properly installed HID's will NOT trigger the idiot light to go on.

Depends on the system. Seems the P1 cars do some sort of relative efficency monitoring. While the P2 compare to absolute values.

You can always wire in a resistor if you're worried.

Figure where you want to mount the ballast and plug in the wire harness(es). Good to go. 15-30 minute process. Depends how much of a turtle you are.

Good luck.

You can add a dummy load to compensate for the lower current drain. I would use a DMM in series to measure how many amps are drawn with a regular halogen and then with the HIDs. Subtract the two and you will know the amount extra current you need to drain.

Using the formula R = V/I; where R = resistance we want, V = voltage of the circuit (12V), I = current drain.

So given a halogen bulb drew 4.5 amps (55W @ 12V, 55/12 = 4.5834) and we'll say a HID ballast draws 2.9 amps (35W @ 12V, 35/12 = 9.167), the difference is 1.6 amps.

R = 12/1.6 = 7.5ohms. You'll need a large 7.5 ohm resistor, atleast 18 watts.

And kevin your wrong, properly installed HID kits will trigger the dipped beam light to come on. My hids are installed correctly, and my light comes on constantly. http://www.xenonvalot.com/xenonfixvolvo.html Read here. I would also fix my light, but i dont know where to find the CEM. sad.gif

What a PITA. I just pulled my cluster bulb, Problem solved.

I'm not an idiot who needs to know when my turn signal or brake lights are out. I have eyeballs for that.

haha, maybe it's a 850 vs 70 series thing, cause my old lights were installed incorrectly, and the light came on, new lights... installed correctly... no idiot light.

Our Central Electrical Unit is also under the dash. However, the bulb failure system is located in the trunk, opposite of the gas filler door. I haven't played with it, but I have a spare one in the garage.
