Alright here's the scoop. I have a ryobi orbital buffer. It has a 10" diameter. I have one more question...where can i get applicator pads for it.  Im pretty sure its a low speed. All i am trying to do is get swirls outa my paint. It shouldn't be anything aggressive at all, and wool would absolutely dispatch my paint. Secondly, where do i get detailing supplies? Ive tried places such as autozone, they ahve some stuff but not really anything great. I also found some good stuff at target. They have zymol leather care, and some good tire stuff as well as meguires gold class wax. Where do i get all the good polishes and applicator pads? thanks

I've seen pads for those in places like Kragen or Autozone. Your best bet would be to post pics to see how bad your paint is so we can suggest what kind of pad and how abrasive the polish should be. You can get a lot of supplies online. I get mine from http://www.premiumautocare.com/. by the way dont even bother with the Meguiars gold class wax, they're not that good.

So would it be a good idea to first wash it normally, then claybar it to lift off all the little stuff you can't really see, then buff it with the sponge/rubbing compound, then apply one layer of wax?

What brands are good/worth the cash?

Polish and wax, namely.

edit- cause junibunie expressed his distaste for Meguires Gold Class.

I actually wanted to know what Jake uses.

Anybody have any experience with Menzerna's Intensive Polish? I think I'm going to grab some of that and an orange cut pad for my Porter-Cable and tackle some of my swirls and light scratches.

lol actually the products I use aren't expensive, but yeah wash the car, clay then wash again. Dry, use a sealant, then wax. I'm sure cody has a write up about this somewhere.

I've tried different polishes and I'm very happy with poorboyspoorboys pro polishes. For waxes I recommend S100/P21s. I'm a big fan of Meguiars too just not the gold class wax and clay bar.

Scott, I've tried menzerna in the past, good polish, great results but I had a difficult time removing it even with the Porter Cable.

If you use an orbital buffer it is pretty hard to burn the paint unless you just hold it place the non orbital buffers will burn paint but only if you hold it in one spot or hit corners or edges hard with it. If you are worried about burning stay away from wool. I have been using meguires stuff for years and I use the spray detail all the time on my cars.I have 94 van in the showroom thread (ride before volvo) wax once a year and spray detail once a month works great

Hey - I was reading about an update to Menzerna's Final Polish II that might cure that problem ...

QUOTE
Improved for 2004: The factory made a very slight change in this product for the US market. They added some lubricating oils to keep the product wetter, allowing longer polishing. This may be an advantage if you live in a climate of high heat and/or humidity (Florida, Texas, Arizona, etc.). While this change was very small we felt we should identify this as a change because the original formula Final Polish is still being sold to body shops and the OEM market. We asked the factory in Germany to make this change because we felt it made the polish more user friendly for the enthusiast.

I'm not sure if they also made this change to the IP ... I'll give them a call.

i use a base paint cleaner, then go on with a showcar glaze and then a final coat of my fav wax found in your local walmart called zymol..

does wonders, also you can do all this by hand but it takes a while.. so i just recommend a cheapo buffer w/ terry cloth applicators.

Ok I polish cars for a summer job...it's my business. You'll be just fine w/ your orbital buffer. It won't hurt the paint as long as you take the advice given in this column and use a regular polishing foam pad and don't put all your weight onto the buffer. Just use it gently and everything will turn out well. As for waxes and polishes: I realize most people are going to get angry for me saying this but most inexpensive waxes are about the same; whether you go for maguires or mothers or even turtle wax, they'll all last a couple of months and give a half decent shine. The polish however can make a difference. I recommend going w/ 3-M's line of polishes...this is what a number of body shops use after re-painting etc or if they are doing a recondition. You can find these at your local auto parts store. Another good place to look is on this website: http://www.topoftheline.com You can look for polishes there...just stick to the ones that are for light compounding/light swirl removal for your purposes. Good luck
