So I was playing around the other day, trying to get my fog lights to come on all the time...touched a couple of wires together, got some smoke, and now my fog lights do not come on. The fuse is still good (i.e. it did not blow); the light for the fog light picture on the switch comes on; but when I flip the switch to the ON position, the rectangular green light does not come on, nor do the fog lights.

Is the switch garbage? Or is there something else I should be looking at? I am going to try my brother's fog light switch tomorrow and see what happens.

switches usually don't break (unless you melted the contacts or something)
i agree it is probably the relay

hopefully it's the relay, but it could be the actual wiring from the switch to the relay.

Is the relay part of the switch? Or is it located somewhere else in the dash or something? Is there a standard relay location?

I think there is a box of relays under the dash on the drivers side...finding the relay, however, is something I can't tell you about!

Take down the kick panel on the drivers side and the relay panel is on the fire wall out board and up. The fog relay is a "J" type relay and it's located top left on the relay board. (it could be labled 201) European models also use relay 213 bottom left on that same panel. Just to be sure the fuse is #18. You might turn everything on and see if you have power at the bulb.

The J relay thats top left of the panel we were talking about further up the thread is a small simple relay, 1 x 1 inch. That price sounds too high, try

If you can't find it as aways give them a call and quote the part number you want.

heres my .02 bits

go get current tester *thats what i call he little screwdriver witht the pointy end and a light in the middle that has an alligator clip to go to a ground wire* and test the wiring before you replace anything, it will save you money and a headache if that is what is wrong. hence you wont have to fix your relay just to find out you have a dead wire. find the dead spot in your wire and either replace it with the same wire from your hardware store or see if you can splice the wire.

Get a pin out of the wires in the switch, and a pin out of the wires at the relay and start checking for current with your test light probe. Also a good wiring diagram would help you trace wires.

so today I checked for power at the bulb, and no power there. Since the switch still lights, is it most likely the relay then?

There are a bunch of relays under the fuse panel box (remove the 4 screws at the corners to gain access to it). Is this where the fog light relay is located? I noticed that there were (I think) three J relays with the same p/n that Rich listed above. I am just wondering what these relays are for, if not for the fog lights.

Is there an easier way to access the relay? For instance, can the whole relay panel and fuse box be pulled straight up once the hood is open? I tried crawling down under the driver's kick panel, and I can barely see the relay, let alone try and reach it to release it and put a new one in. If the relay panel doesn't go up, does it slide down at all?

Ok, so I figure out how to gain easy access to the relay panel. But Rich, the spot onthe board you referred to does not have a fog light relay, according to VADIS

This second picture (below) shows the other relays located underneath the fuses...form what I can tell, there is only one lighting relay...the 104/108 main lighting relay

So is it the main lighting relay that I want to replace in order to get my fogs to work again (assuming that it is the relay that is bad)?
