This confirms that I should not have done this myself. My car is ruined. I may have to shell out for new pieces. Also, I need to know if there is a way to remove the trim on the bumpers without removing the bumpers. I not, then does someone have diagram/instructions on how to remove the entire bumpers?

I could not find a good dark grey paint, so I went with Dupli-Color Black Bumper Paint on the moldings, and I went with Krylon Fusion Self-Etching Primer and Krylon Fusion Ultra-Flat Black on the windshield trim. I don't so much mind the moldings, but I HAVE to do the bumpers and mud guards now, and possibly the door handles, and maybe even the rails (all this crap made the painting seem like a huge mistake)....Obviously, the windshield trim is a gonner...gonna have to buy new ones of those.

I know how you feel..mine look very similar after painting, but you can't really tell from a distance...it bothers me, but for now I'll deal with it, I really don't feel like spending 300-400 on new roof strips! (not sure on exact cost, but I believe it's something like that.

Yeah, what exactly did you mess up aside from the windshield trim? The door trim and handle look very well painted. Did you take the trim off? I'm impressed with the door handle cos it is quite a hassle to spray paint especially the back part of the handle. I can see the bumper covers haven't been painted yet - I believe they are riveted and a big hassle to remove so just mask off the surrounding areas.

The hard part about painting the roof strips is getting off the remaining plastic peeling dark gray tape and not damaging the aluminum underneath, also getting all the tape off is quite challenging without damaging any of the rubber on the edges. You can also easily bend the strips. The other problem is taping, there is not much margin for error...and yes you have to take the strips off your roof (this part is easy).

Pras I wouldn't freak out quite yet, your car is not completely ruined tongue.gif

the door moldings look good, and I'd go right ahead and mask off the bumpers realllly well and hit those with paint asap. As for the roof trim, at that point I'd probably just take it all off and put one solid coat of paint on the entire thing and see how that holds up.

Don't freak out too much, there's always a solution to pretty much everything smile.gif

I think the bumpers and side trim looks great but the window molding do like kinda crummy, you could try sanding them out and re-spraying with a different paint.

I agree Kev, it could be a lot worse- and it definitely stood out a lot more before he did anything to it.

Well, I didn't do the door handles, so maybe it just looks like I did them. The paint job on the trim is good, but it doesn't match up too well. Too dark compared to the door handles and all the rest of the trim on the car (mud flaps, window insulation, roof rails, etc). I think I should paint the entire windshield trim now that it looks so crappy, but I don't think anything will stick to that rubber. I was masking off the bumpers, but that is VERY risky and very tough to do. That paint can fly everywhere and get on anything, so I sort of backed out of that, so I'm stuck. I'm thinking about just getting all new trim, depending on price. I thought it looked okay after armor all, except for that windshield part....Anyway, I used Duplicolor Black Bumper Coating for the moldings, and Krylon Fusion Self-Etching Primer and Krylon Fusion Ultra-Flat Black on the windshield trim. Man, I am really dissappointed. I have to do something to fix this. If anyone wants to trade their regular old grey moldings for the black ones I have, I'll do it for free!!!

So is the rubber of the windshield trim damaged, or just the paint peeling? I think you can fix that just strip everything off (while the trim is off the car) then let it soak in Rit dye overnight in a really hot bathtub. Rinse it several times, then reinstall. Then just paint the bumpers, handles and mudflaps. The painted trim will never need dressing, I used the same method on my old car.

I'd have to sand the new paint off I think...the rubber is pretty messed up NOW...I used self etching primer, and it got on the rubber...that was bad news...I may give it a shot with sanding it down again, but we'll see how motivated I am...for now, if anyone wants to trade well painted black moldings for original grey ones, i will....

For reference on the roof strips, they are pretty costly, like someone mentioned $300-400 if I remember correctly. Theyre expensive because it's all one long piece, therefore a PITA to ship and such. You can take off the front bumper molding, if you have a Hayne's manual it shows how to do it. The back though, is all one piece, so you're gonna have to do that very carefully. I wanted to take everything off back in the fall and redo my moldings, but a strictly Volvo body shop advised against it. Hope this helps..

I just did all my moldings, door handles, bumbers, and roof strips. it all seems to be holding up well. The roof strips were chipped up so I just cut them off with a razor blade. Then I sanded the aluminum really lightly and just painted the metal black. It seemed to work well.

Yeah, I used some Jasco crud remover on the windshield / A-pillar trim, and then lightly sanded the aluminum, primered it, sprayed it flat black, but the rubber parts got primer and stuff all over them...don't know if paint would stick well to the rubber, so i had masked it off

Ian, did you remove the handles and bumpers to paint them? did you spray or brush?

My roof/windshield moulding looked the exact same as yours.. but when I got my car painted, the people at Maaco said they'd fix it up. All they did was peel off the rest of the stuff with I'm guessing a razor, then paint over it. They also painted my trim, bumpers included, so if worst came to worst, you could just take it to a paint and body shop and have em do it. Probly cheaper than ordering all new trim.
