OK, this has been sort of buggin me a bit recently: I step on the brake pedal after I haven't used it in a bit and there is a bit of squishiness at the top of the pedal that firms up quickly as I push it. No problem braking. The thing is that if I come off the pedal and get back on it quickly, it seems to firm up higher in the pedal stroke. Each time I come off and on again quickly it stay consistent, but once I lay off it for a bit and get on it, I get that squishiness again.

I am pretty positive that it's not the master cylinder, as the pedal doesn't sink when I'm stopped at a light or anything (once I reach the firmness, it stays firm). I'm wondering if the vacuum booster may be losing efficiency or something. Is there a line or elbow or something that's known to degrade over time?

Anyone else notice this when they brake?

I recently flushed with a pressure bleeder - only a few thousand miles since. I will bleed again and see what happens.

My dads car (95 850 turbo) had that right after we replaced all the rear brake components and power flushed almost 4 quarts through the system.

So if anyone has any ideas that would be great.

I'm having the same problem with my 96 850 turbo. When I press it the first time it travels lower than when I repress it again. The brake pedal does not sink to the floor. Anyone knows why? cool.gif

I'm pretty sure that the reason this happens is that the distance one of the pads has to travel to contact the rotor is greater than the other(s). When you press the brake pedal, one pad makes contact with the rotor and then the other takes a moment longer, leading to the squishy feeling. It takes some time for the pads to return - so if you press the pedal again, the pads are relatively equal in terms of distance from the rotor and they make contact together, no squishy feeling.

I haven't noticed this recently at all - but I haven't done anything to "cure" it. I think it's just a wear thing.
