I am trying to figure out why my car smells like it is running really rich. I have a 94 850 turbo with 148,00 miles on it. I just spent three months fixing all kinds of problems and the car was running great. Then I had the car shipped from CA to RI and when it got here the check engine light came on and the fuel smell became really strong. today I am going to check all the hoses and I just replaced the fuel filter before I left and it does not have a leak. I am thinking that a hose may have come off or maybe something is clogged from the car sitting for 2 weeks. I need some help, please do not ask me to have the car scanned for 80 dollars, this has always been a waste of money.

Do you smell this in the cabin, or are you talking about how it smells coming out o the tailpipe?

If you smell it in the cabin, turn the key to position II without turning the car out, you'll hear the fuel system pressurized. Now inspect it carefully (especially lines to fuel rail/fuel pressure regulator, and around the fuel rail at the injectors). Since the fuel is prressurized you should see any that is coming out of the system.

check your 02 sensors and Cat also, to me at least(bad smeller) the sulfer<dead catalyst> smell and the burning rich smell are soemwhat similar in the cabin.

Another thought,

If you smell things sitting in traffic it could be coming from any part of the engine/exhaust system (like the previously mentioned catayltic converter). If you only smell it at highway speeds, it is probably coming from the engine compartment.

I think you should be able te read the codes yourself in a 94. They might be helpful - if there's one thing the OBD codes pick up it's mixture-related problems. The OBD system was put there by EPA mandate in the first place.
