My 96 started doing this about a month or so ago. It seems to be able to still lock, but won't unlock anymore. I am thinking the thing is clogged with dirty jerk grease, and needs to be cleaned out and maybe lightly regreased. I havn't attacked it yet, because it isn't going to get any worse, and that little pull handle still works biggrin.gif

Goodness, this thing is contagious. I am suddenly experiencing the same thing. The gas door will lock via the motor but can only be manually unlocked via the emergency wire release.

Really strange that the motor will work in one way but not the other, so the motor can't be totally dead, right?

Someone mentioned about removing the motors and giving it a shot of WD40. Another mentioned about just disabling the locking mechanism altogether but that leaves the gas cap unprotected. With soaring gas prices, what a perfect time for the thing to fail. Anyway, what about a replacement gas cap with built-in key-lock? Is there one that's made for our cars? This should be cheaper than replacing the motor.

The motor is $105.00 and labor is a half an hour. so about $140.00, kinda spendy. I like the locking gas cap idea better biggrin.gif

The part number I found for the motor for the gas door is 350966, I'd check with FCP groton, you can make the change yourself and save the money. I think a few torx25 hold the thing in there.

I had the same issue with my 95 850 glt, and this is crazy but after a few pulls on the inside trunk opener it went away, that was about a year ago.

Just got my car for less than a month. The gas door locked dead once, I had to manually unlock it. And from then on, the gas door is not locked at all. I can't find any switch or any gas door opener in the car. I could not find any info on the car manual either (except the manual unlock tip). Is is normal for 95' 850 GLT?

I do not know if that is normal or not, but your car should have a maual lever puller thing. I fixed mine, I unpluged it and pulled on the chaina couple of times and no it works like new. biggrin.gif

Is the "maual lever puller thing" you mentioned the one that I have open the trunk side cover to do it? If yes, I do have it. I was talking about the lever that should be in the car, but I can't find it.

How do you disable to locking of the gas door?
I am not too worried about gas stealing, it's just a pain to go and pull that cord everytime I want to fill up.

Just in case someone's looking for it via search ... Volvo makes a gas tank cap with a built-in lock & key. Part # 9142606-4. Costs about C$37.

I had the same problem with my gas door, was dead when I bought it, didn't work at all. I took the thing off, completely opened it (was easy too!). I opened the motor and cleaned the brushes (metal things on a spring that keep a constant contact on the center core of the motor, these things had some wear and metal dust was everywhere in the motor, cleaned it all up) <------- that's a hell of a parentheses! Now my motor has been working perfectly well since. I have noticed a thing while doing this, the antenna isn't necessarely well positioned, you have to check it from the top so that the antenna is PERFECTLY centered over the post in which it goes, if not it'll stop half way through of anywhere else where it gets too much friction. It's pretty easy, you just need a small wrench.

NB : opening the motor and cleaning it up took me 2 hours, but I took my time and did it well.
