I bought this wagon with 112K on it so I've never had it new and I've not had another wagon to compare it against. I have a hard time believing Volvo could sell as many as they did with it sounding like a bass drum every time I go over bumps and road roughies. I have to believe that something is worn out and/or loose. I did the tailgate fix, and stuffed high density weatherstripping into every crevice. Sure, the squeeks stopped but man, it still sounds like I'm inside a big drum. It drive me nuts. I can actually feel the pressure changing in the cabin of the car when I hit the bumps. Fortunately my wife drives this car and doesn't seem to be bothered- though she does acknowledge that I am right. So far, it make me love my 850 4-door even more. It does not do this.
by the way, The wagon has 230K mi now. Anysuggestions?

I have no explanation for bass drum sounds in a wagon. Where does the sound come from? I would try to sit in the rear and have someon drive it gently over bumps and try to localise the sound.
My sounds are squeaks, rattles and wind noise. Maybe we could start a band as you have the percussion all set

It sounds like the hatch isn't fully latched if you are losing pressure. Check that the hatch is fully latched at deos not move at all when closed. You can adjust the striker a little either way, depending on what you determine.
Otherwise it might be those Duke of Hazard jumps and the altitude that causes the pressure change. My wife also never acknowledges our cars making strange noises, except when she hits the chin spoiler going straight out of driveways in my 855.

I've adjusted the striker and everything seems tight. Maybe a loose interior panel is doing it. It's just nuts. Maybe I'm going nuts.

One thing I tried that seemed to help somewhat was to add tape to the striker bar of the tailgate. I added a strip of duct tape to thicken up the bar which the tailgate latch locks onto.

my friends 84 subaru wagon had dents all across the top from the time he walked over his car. it popped like a snapple bottle every time you closed a door.
i'd suspect a loose panel somewhere.

Sure, every bump you hit feels like a concrete block has fallen on the car, but no drum. I think you've got something else wrong.
