Guys,
I am putting in a new alternator on my 96 855 turbo - I have two bolts off the power steering pump bracket; the bolt off the radiator side of the alternator and the one directly back towards the passenger compartment. The pump bracket moves back and forth but won't come up, is there a third bolt? where? are there any things to watch out for or tricks to know on doing this job? thanks. I am stuck till I figure out how to get the bracket off (I can't see any other bolts, it is really a cramped area to work in!!)
Thanks

Look for the bolts that go through the pulley. you will have to rotate the pulley to access them. Pick up a Haynes manual for $20, that will help too. This job is kind of a pain but stck with it. You will need to remove the power steering pump too of I remember correctly.

This is very frustrating!! I have both the Chilton and Haynes manual, the Chilton has several pictures on how to remove the power steering bracket and the alternator.. I can't find where the power steering bracket bolts on the bottom. The chilton pictures show the whole assembly pulled off the engine. Has anyone done it this way? it almost seems that the bottom pulley on the bracket is somehow bolted in the engine?! any guidence would be appreciated thanks

Well I removed the bottom pulley on the bracket (the one below the tensioner) and discovered a bolt coming thru from the drivers side behind the alternator into the bottom of the bracket. The head of the bolt is 14mm, the only way I can see to get a wrench on it is to remove the upper radiator hose, unhook the oil dipstick bracket into the intake and see it I can cram my arm and wrench down in there.. is there a better way? I am also tempted to remove the power steering pump from the bracket in order to get the hoses out of the way to better enable me to get to that bolt. Boy I never thought it would be this tough to get a bolt loose. Again, any suggestions would be appreciated

The alternator does not have any 14mm bolts, so don't take it off.
all the bolts are 13mm except the nut that holds the power cable to the alternator, and the nut for the top spacer bracke, it's 13 also, all the rest are 12mm.

Thanks for the tip on the Alternator post mortem. It appears you don't remove the power steering pump/ tensioner assembly like Chilton recommended, only the pump and its bracket. I have been wasting a lot of time trying the other way!! I will put all that back together and try the simpler method. thanks

I got it in - boy I wasted a lot of time trying to follow the Chilton manual - it said to remove the power steering pump and tensioner bracket as a unit which is crazy!! once I removed the power steering pump by itself it all came apart pretty easily, I did disconnect the radiator hose as well. Thanks for the tips.
