Hi Guys,

Please help me i have an '94 850 2.0i 20V and I lifted the hood and degreased and hosed the engine down and after I attempted to start the engine and there was the normal clunk whirr and then i let go of the key and then stalled I tried again and when you turn the Key it just whirrs i know the starter motor is engaging (belts turning/cam belt turning) and it just stops nothing works no fault codes in the diagnostic centre, my dad said to sod the recomendations of volvo (only turning over for 5 secs) and hold down for ages, the engine seemed to get quicker and quicker and then suddenly fired up but i didnt rev so it just stalled and then tried again same thing happened but this time it started with alot of white smoke it now starts fine i honestly cant think what it is. please please please help me, I know that I we need to replace it soon its done 147K miles biggrin.gif and things are starting to go wrong the other day the thermostat failed and now its stalling when slowing down if anyone can help me with that that would be good!!! Our Volvo has served us well and after 11 years having it nothing has been more reliable until now. and we have found no other car that will hold a Double bass, 2 Cellos and a tuba with 2 in the front!!! So I think that a Volvo V70 T5 is coming my way very soon!

Thanks in advance
Ruan Ellis Cornwall England

Hi Ruan

Sounds like you might have got water into the spark plug holes. Take off the black plastic cover on the engine and lift off the ignition hoses. You might find water has got in.

Either leave it to dry in the sun, of get an air-line to blast out the water.

Where in Cornwall are you?, I am near Okehampton.

Whoops, managed to get logged in this time!

I just thought water could also be in you distributor cap.

Same thing, just take it off and dry it.
Hope fully the sensors and ECU have not got too much water in them.

Thats not the problem, i only degreased the exhaust manifold and rubbed a bit of it on the fuel rail, I pulled the fault codes (first time so maybe spikes) there were 2 on ABS and 1 on the engine A2 that only came once i know what they are but i cleared them and i drove it a bit but they aint come back but the other day my dad complained of it stalling, is this due to the thermostat replace (the engine got pretty hot not in red we limped home without it getting into red) its now running real rough our mechanic told me that the head gasket is about to go is it this, the revs fluctuale i started it and it started first time no probs but it was running well under the normal and then was revving pretty high so i stopped the engine and came to speak to you I am at my wits end with this car tis really annoying me. oh well I hope the water aint done any damage any water i expect should have evaporated we i ran it before and drove it round. I live in Playing Place or as everyone knows it the village with 2 roundabouts..... wow!!! biggrin.gif

Thanks again
Ruan Ellis

P.S. sorry about the name it was an accident I wasnt concentrating I was thinking of other things e.g. our Nissan Micra eww I hate it ticks!!!! sorry ohmy.gif

Well its going in to Volvo today when I can be bothered at the moment. There is one thing I noticed when I had the little throttle body cover off, on the air intake there is a pipe that seems to have come off a wide pipe that goes in on the side of the pipe closest towards the back so is this making the air intake loose pressure the car is non turbo. the pipe is also covered in oil and grime it looks like the pipe on the page with how to change the flame trap. The head gasket is not causing any problems that we know of but a friend of ours said it was going to go quite soon its not inevitable though. if it is this pipe then i will just refix it but it looks to have come out so i honestly dont know. I think I know what the starting problem is http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/850_start.htm the second problem down I think is ours this explains the gettign quicker and quicker and seeming to catch more often as the system built up pressure again and eventully started (we did only move the car a short distance just enough to turn on the hydraulic tappets its not the ECU cold running sequence as the engine just would turn over and it had been left for about a whole 4 hours before restarting) wink.gif

Thanks in advance
