My '98 V70 T5 has a whine when it starts up, particularly when it is cold. It sounds like a failed bearing in something, but whatever it is, is connected to an electric motor, as it turns off before I can find exactly where it is coming from. The sound is coming from under the battery / air filter, or somewhere in there? Any ideas?

squeaky belt i bet. but that wouldn't be coming from underneath the battery area...

So is this just the SAS valve, or is it the air pump/motor that is bad? I'm almost certain this is it because of the 2 minute warm up time. Does this system also come on when the engine is warm?

It shouldn't, but when it's bad it may.
