The tool I have at work is calibrated for Dot 4 on the left and Dot 4+ on the right, I'll take a look on Monday and write down the figures so you can have an idea of the difference between Dot 4 and 4+. I don't have the scale for Dot 3 would have to buy another $300 tool and I'm not doing that to make a point.

use ate super blue as it exceeds dot 5.1. plus the blue helps when flushing.

U.S. Federal regulations, SAE specs 1703 and 1705, and ISO specs specify the performance of brake fluids, not their chemical composition.
I think that DOT5.1 and DOT4+ are the same thing and both are conventional polyglycol ether brake fluids that meet the silicone DOT5 boiling temperature performance spec.
I alternate use of the ATE blue and ATE amber. (Say, "ah-TAY.")
Here's some brake fluid info:

So the stock fluid in 98 S70 will agree with ATE super blue?
I have a mechanic telling me that I shouldn't put the super blue in due to it's synthetic wieght. And that it will swell up my seals. Even if I do a flush.
is this correct?

Blah, I just had someone IM me that dot 4 and dot 5 always had a higher dry boil point than a dot 3. Off the top of my head I know Wilwood, and Castrol make a dot 3 with a boil of over 550. Its very rare to find a 4/5.1 with a boil that high. I agree with Rich. I would only use a 4/4+/5.1 in my street car, but thats only because I am too lazy to flush it every 6 months like I should
Just a note to all readers.. DO NOT USE DOT 5 in your brake systems.. Dot 5.1/Dot4/4+/3 is NOT COMPATABLE.
Oh...and 550... Motul Dot 5.1 isnt completely impressive compared to Valvoline Store Bought for about 1/4th or less the price...
Super Blue is the way to go on our street cars systems (Terms of Price & Perf)

No it will not. It sometimes isnt preferred because of its BLUE color.. and doing a flush AFTER superblue ( I honestly would not know how OLD and new superblue would look like) so you would not be able to tell when you've completely flushed it. *shrugs* unless someone knows if/what color super blue becomes when it begins to absorb more and more water/rust from keeping the brake system clean... but Super Blue is Dot3,4,4+,5.1 compatable..

Synthetic weight??? There is no such thing as a "natural" brake fluid. All are products of a chemistry lab. "Weight"??? Isn't the viscosity of all about the same? (Some tractors do use mineral hydraulic oil as brake fluid. Is this forum JohnDeereSpeed?)is this correct?
Seals?...maybe. There are different chemicals in the brake fluid that give it its properties including wet boiling point. In some systems the elastomers might not be compatible with these chemicals. The Volvo clearly calls for DOT4+ brake fluid, so that is what is needed. I've used ATE now for two years in my '96 with good results.
