two questions:

1) i just bought my car 2 weeks ago. i noticed that once it gets warmed up, the thermostat looks like this (red being where it normally should be, black being where mine is):

what should i do to correct this?

2) this doesn't happen all the time, but when i drive down hills, sometimes it feels as though the car suddently stops for a second and then jerks back forward agian. almost as if i were to like shift into reverse while i'm going 20 miles an hour and swtich back to drive real fast or something. the car kinda shakes or jerks. when i'm accelerating, the gears shifting are no where near that kind of feel, it shifts just fine (automatic transmission). same with going into reverse.

thanks!

how long does it take for your car to warm up? mine takes 4-5 mins when it's cold, and 2-3 if it is warm out(which it has been lately). my temp gauge never lines up in the center. it's always off center just a bit, usually towards the cold side.

have you had your transmission flushed? how does the fluid look? is it dark and burnt smelling?

1) Could be a temp sender problem or maybe restricted flow in the radiator. It doesn't seem off that much, so I probably wouldn't worry about it yet.

2) I get some jerking going down a hill, but not when I am fully off the gas pedal. It happens when I am barely on it. Also, mine is subtle, so not sure about yours.

i've actually been very surprised compared to my parent's cars. it usually takes about 3 minutes to warm up. it's a very bit off center, towards the hot side. it isn't a huge amount, so i'm not real concerned. i thought maybe this just happens?

i do believe the previous owner bought the kit from IPD and flushed the transmission himself. where do i look to check the color of the fluid? i'm a car n00b now, slowly becomg less of one as i read this site. thanks!

1) yeah, that's what i was thinking.

2) it is subtle, although it's enough to notice. it's nothing that's like 'wow', it's just there. it doesn't happen all the time, only when i'm coasting down a very large hill

My understanding is that the temp guage really is not graduated the way an analog guage is. It really displays cold - normal - hot. I don't think your car is running any hotter than someone whose display reads dead 90 degrees.

Temp gauge is normal
As for the jerk coasting downhill...Are you sure it's not downshifting?(dropping a gear) outta OD

I wouldn't worry much about that then. It is an odd sensation and you think something might be wrong, but I don't think so. When it happens to me I am on the freeway above 60, so I don't think it is shifting down. It does sorta feel that way, but it is no more than one second and it is back to what it was.

To check your transmission fluid color, just wipe the transmission dip stick on a nice clean white rag. (or a paper towel if you are not too fussy about lint - some people are)

It should be a nice, clear, pink.

You should perform the same test on your power steering fluid also.
