Heyas, I was just wondering how often do i need to change my spark plugs. And what type of spark plug is good for my 1993 Volvo 850. Also will changing my spark plugs usually help smoothen out idle? Thanks Guys.

i think once a year or every 10k miles is what my manual quotes.
new plugs might help smooth out your idle if the old ones are really dirty. if you haven't done your cap, rotor and wires yet, you might want to look into that as well.

Every 10000 mile might be to a little to freq. I think the average mileage for a spark plug change is every 30000 miles. The best kind of plugs are Volvo OEM.

Changing plugs can help... but check your distributor Cap and Rotor too.
Check Vacuum lines as well, as those can smooth out your idle too.
New Oil..etc... (general tune up stuff)
ALso... if your battery is getting old... it may cause some bad idling too.

yeah, i guess it depends on how much you drive. i only put about 10k a year on my car, so i change my plugs once a year.
my habits may change now that i have this Volvo. my Celica liked to foul the plugs, but it also burned oil.

So far i've had no idea how often to change the plugs, so I change them ever 10K service at the dealer..good to know they should last longer
I replaced my cap/rotor/wires like 15K ago and the new OEM plugs are in for like 1500 miles but sometimes I get a few "misses" (blow-out??) between 3000 and 3500 rpm at 16-17-18psi. Doesnt occur at higher rpm...I guess most people here cant reach that kind of boost that low down with the autoboxes which shift up though..

Jan, just because you have a 5 speed doesn't mean you need to rub it in.

what gap are you running on your plugs? some people have found that a smaller gap will help with misfires when you are running high boost.

lol, I just meant to say that most here wouldnt be able to try this out even if they wanted to...so they would never know its a problem on their car. It doesnt occur past 3500rpm, ever.
I know narrowing the gap could help, but i'm not that technical, they're just OEM volvo plugs put in by the dealer...which should do just fine...

lowering the gap really isn't that hard. you just need a spark plug gap tool. i think they're less than $10.
didn't you do all sorts of crazy mods to your computer?
