I have a 95 850 Turbo automatic. I had a check engine light on a few weeks ago saying catalyst was below threshold. I figured the converter was plugged becase performace was weak at the time. SO i gutted out the converter and the light went out and all the power was back......Great! Then the check engine light came back on again, this time it says catalyst slow response? So figure the front 02 sensor may have gotten cooked from the heat of the bad converter. I replaced the front 02 sensor $180!!! and the light still comes on. So my question is: do i replace the rear 02 sensor to solve the problem or does the computer throw on the light when the converter is empty??? Im tired of replacing expensive parts that dont solve the problem. any info much appreciated!!!
Do I Need A Converter On My 95 850 Turbo?

instead of replacing the rear, try swapping the front and rear... see if the light comes on the front one again.

Actually, swapping the sensors isn't going to do anything. The reason you are getting the current CEL is because you don't have a converter anymore. It is slow to respond because it isn't there to respond.
There are 3 things you can do. First, you can do nothing and live with it. Second, you can replace the cat. Third, there is a way to fool the second sensor into thinking everything is ok. I don't know exactly what that is, but do a search on here to find the answer. I know of a few people who aren't using cats at all.

Don't we all love those who make cheap, dirty and probably illegal fixes to cars before selling them?
Or is it just me?

I hate it!...I actually kinda got burned when I bought my 95 everything checked out ok with the exception of a few minor issues which is usual. It was serviced by another well know indy about 40 miles from me I called him and he told me about the issues that I had already found. What he didn't tell me is that he pulled the MIL bulb!!! I noticed it about 2 weeks after I bought it! A pair of 0/2's later and eventually an AMM we were all fixed up. I couldn't believe I missed that but??? What made me furious is that he actually pulled the bulb? What comes around goes around. If I would have known that I could have heckeled the price a bit....naaah I really wanted the car.

Just to keep everything on the table, Im more than willing to disclose to any potential buyer that the cat is gutted. and i would never pull the CEL bulb to hide it. I just figured that more people would be interested in a car with a gutted cat then a car with a CEL on. Alot of people run test pipes and gutted cats. But nobody likes to see a CEL light on, it is degrading to a car that could otherwise be in cherry condition. But i agree that anyone that doesnt disclose information is dishonest and should be spotlighted by others. In my case Ive simply discounted my car as much as i can and dont want to jack the price back up by replacing the converter. Espically if the next person doesnt car about it anyway and just wants a pricepont in their budget!
I hope this clears the air for my question anyway..
