so i got a boost gauge installed into my car last week. i have been watching it very closely since.

i notice that when i floor it in first gear from a stop, i hit about 7psi of boost, it spikes up to about 10psi when the car shifts into second. after that, i build boost until 7psi, and it drops back down to 5psi and stays there until it shifts and i get another spike to about 10psi. does this sound like a boost leak? the only reason i ask is because i find it odd that i hold 7psi in first, but i can't hold more than 5psi in any other gear. huh.gif

i have not done my vac lines or turbo/IC hoses yet, so i very well could have a leak, but i want to throw this out here to see if maybe it's an easier fix.

thanks Stephen!

secretly i was hoping that it is a simple "sounds like such and such vac line is disconnected." of course, i'm pretty sure i just need new hoses.

i'm seriously considering a custom RIP setup. Boostn lives a few miles away from me and he is going to fabricate something for his car, after he finishes that, i'm going to check it out and see if he'll make me one as well. biggrin.gif

here is a totally unrelated question, but i don't feel like i should start a new thread for it.

does a '96 850 Turbo have an air pump? when i start my car i get an odd whistling/groaning noise for a few minutes until it warms up.

i read in another thread that the '95 850 T5-Rs did not have the air pump.

also!

how should boost build? i'd think that i won't get full boost until "x" RPM, and then at "x" RPM my boost will start to taper off until it shifts.

anyone know what i should be expecting?

i'm just full of questions today! blink.gif

Yes you have an air pump.....and boost spikes are normal while shifting but sounds like you may have a boost leak if it's not consistent through out the gears

if the air pump is under the battery tray, with a hose running to it from the airbox, i would have to say that i don't have one. huh.gif

also, i'm not too worried about the boost spikes. i was just wondering about the lack of boost.

i'm not sure what RPM range i should be seeing 10PSI. i also wonder what boost is limited to in 1st gear.

If you can be civil, about the following it will let you know a few things.

Remove the line that goes from the BCS boost controller solenoid, to the waste gate, then go out and see how much boost you can build, take it very easy in 1st, once the car shifts to second then give it some more and once you hit 3rd WOT and then let us know if the boost goes higher and holds.

Do you have a chip?

Rich, i'm not sure which line i should disconnect.

i'm guessing it is somewhere on the airbox, but i'm not sure where. it's not the one that is disconnected in this picture here, is it?
