what does this really mean? will the car start to drive funny after a few miles? do i need to take it to the dealer for service right away? or is it just a reminder to bring it in soon..it has 131k miles on it right now...does it need 130k service from the dealer? or should i just change the oil...and then reset the light..is there a certain tool to reset the service light?...all your inputs are needed..thanks in advance..

I am pretty sure that, that light means that it's time for a service.

That light is just tripped by mileage nothing to worry about really as long as your doing your service..and yes a 96 you need a reset tool

where can i buy a reset tool? i cant just disconnect the battery to reset it, can i?..thanks for the input..

www.fcpgroton.com has a service light reset tool for our cars. it's $169 and all it can do is reset the service light.
i removed the bulb from my gauge cluster so i wouldn't have to spend $170.
Rich has a guide on how to remove the cluster here:

it looks like it uses the OBD-II port to me.

the dealer wont reset it for free...they want me to take it in for a service, 130k service for about $200, and all they do is change the oil and a bunch of checks...i think i'll try to get the tool to reset the service light for $170 and change my own oil..

1996 Volvo 854 2.4L non-turbo 212,xxx miles Forsyth, Ga.
Works in progress - Conversion to turbo with a NA motor or 260hp no turbo. Say a prayer for me.
302mm brakes, IPD sway bars front and rear, QBM end links, MSD 6A ignition w/Blaster 2 coil pack, Jet Chip, Bilstein Shocks/Struts, R Springs. Hell I can't remember everything else.
