hey guys,

i finally got under my car to fix the leaking oil issue. once i got a light under there, using bay 13's directions, i figured out what to do, but the 10mm bolt that i need to remove was pretty stripped. it isn't toally stripped, but it's pretty bad. i was mad that i couldn't fix it.. are there any good tips or tools to use to remove it? hopefully something cheap?

on a side note, the area where the return line comes out (in to?) the engine block was totally covered in some sort of silicone, i guess someone once tried to stop the leak that way.. heh.

thanks!

bolt taps?

oh, I need to do the return line fix....was it easy to access?...obviously you didn't get to it, but when you got under the car (which I haven't done yet in regards to the return line) did it look pretty easy to access?

what we did was took a dremel and just cut 2 notches into it, i.e. to just use a flathead screwdriver and take it out. Then take it to lowe's or a bolt specialty store and they'll have it for you to replace.

it was alright.. i still had issues with getting the wrench in there but if the bolt wasn't stripped. it would be possible

i thought those bolts were allen head ? usually you can tap a larger size wrench in, what i've done in the past if its been so stripped.

This was one of the easiest fixes i've done to the volvo. It takes about 15 minutes, unless you run into a problem like peter0r. Bay13's instructions make it real simple.

when you do this, does any oil leak out, or do you have to do an oil change afterwards?....I just assume when you disconnect the line, it would spill out oil?

Have you tried some serious clamping down force with a pair of vice grips? If I can access the bolt, that's typically enough to get it out.

Depending on which of the two bolts is stripped I think it'd be tough getting a pair of vice grips in there ... but maybe I'm wrong, try it anyway ... desperate times call for desperate measures wink.gif Accessibility is *okay*, but not great.

Pras - No oil will come out when you do this repair.

10mm...so I guess your talking about the bolt and nut that hold the two lines together. that's all it is a bolt and a nut...instead of a wrench try a 10mm 12 point socket and you need a wrench on the top as well...if its really rounded you may be able to get a 3/8"socket on it... if all else fails you could always cut the clamp down the middle and buy a new one

^^^ Like this? This is a pic from my car. Looks like two idiot mechanics in two different parts of the country had the same idiotic idea monkey.gif . Mine hasn't started leaking.... yet, but I do have an extra gasket and o-ring laying in the tool closet in case it does start leaking.

here's a photo of the leaking part and the stuff whoever put on it:

and here's the stupid bolt. i'm thinking of taking it into the volvo place or an indy place and just having them deal with it, it's becoming quite a pain.

^^^ agreed.

I thought you were talking about one of the two hex bolts on the turbo. Yeah, just hack that biatch off. You could probably pick that piece up real cheap from the dealer I'm sure if you feel better having it.
