Hi!

I took my car (98 V70 2.0 LT 180 hp) to my local shop (not a volvo dealer) because my Cel came on periodicly. Went away driving at constant high speed for a period of time, and came on again when driving in the city, doing much stop and go. My local shop could not find any codes, but disconected the battery, and the CEL went away. Only to re-appear.
So i took the car to my Volvo dealer, and they pulled the codes, EFI-232 and 123. They said there were something wrong with the engines temperature sencor, and a leak in a vacumline from the manifold. They fixed this and told me problem solved. Does this sound like problem solved to you guys, or??? Im taking my car on vacation, and dont want the light to re-appear...

Do you guys agree with my Volvo dealer? Problem solved?

Car redy for vecation??

I agree with your dealer, problem solved. Did they put in a new thermostat while they were in there?

well, did your codes go away (CEL)? and, if you look to the left of your intake manifold, is there a new vacuum connector attached there?....any improvement in performance....if that vac line was off, you would have noticed some crappy performance.

OK, but why did the CEL go away when driving at constant high speed for a long period of time, and return when driving slow with a lot of stop and go in the city? I don`t understand the coming and going of the CEL light....

Could sombeody explain it to me?? smile.gif

Thanks for all the comments.. smile.gif

Most of your adaptive fuel trim codes, evaporative codes, catalyst codes, and things of this nature are what we call a two trip code. That means that it takes two complete drive cycles to set the code and bring on a check engine light. I could be wrong on this number but I believe it is 2 complete drive cycles with no reoccurence of the problem and it will turn the light off and leave the code stored. It is either 2 trips or 4, one or the other. Anyhow, when it turns the light out but leaves the code stored this is what is known as a pending code. Now with a pending code all it needs to do is see the fault happen once and it brings on the light.

I'm saying you managed to get a couple of drive cycles under your belt without it seeing the fault so it cleared the light and put the DTC into a pending status. Then when you were driving surface streets it logged the fault again and brought on the light.

Incidently if you were able to click off something like 40 complete drive cycles without the fault reoccuring then it will go ahead and erase the fault completely.

This is all OBDII design and function which you really do not see Volvo teaching, although by law they are supposed to conform to it. I've been to plenty of Volvo schools and never once have I ever heard them mention a "pending" code and if you go into their systems with their scanner you can't even pull a pending code. If you look at a lot of the domestic stuff though you can.
