The AC works great for about 5-10 minutes, then the compressor seems to stop working. The fan continues to blow, but the air gets warmer, indicating that the compressor isn't working.
If I turn the AC off it doesn't matter, it seems to be off for a while. However, when I turn the car off, it will re-start the compressor.
I haven't waited out the compressor while running because it got too hot, so it may come back on after a certain amount of time. One of these times i'll wait it out.
Ideas?

One more question, can I replace my manual control with an automatic control unit?
I have a '95 850 GLT and would use a '94 850 automatic control unit.

it would be one hell of a project to replace a man climate controll w/ an auto...sensors, ecu (has climate controll codes), e/t/c...
so yes you could do it but it would be a pain...
A/C shutting off- when was the last recharge? Does the compressor make any odd noises?

no odd noises, and I don't know about the last recharge... I bought the car a month ago.

Checking the refrigerant level is usually the first step in diagnosing AC problems.
Low refrigerant level will cause the compressor to cycle off and on.

hmmm, doesn't sound like a recharge scenario if it's blowing cold air when it's on, and just turns off....if it was low, like stated above, it would cycle ON AND OFF!
I think something else is going on here....possibly the compressor itself being bad....

I am having the exact same problem. I added a can of refrigerant and the gauge reads charged now. When it blows cold now it is really cold, but like he said, it runs for a few and then the cabin gets rather humid, then down right hot. If I turn the fan off for a few and then back on it will run for a few again. Please help! By the way, i just used victor for my abs and was absolutely and completely pleased with the turn around and the value....Thanks!

Sounds like the clutch is getting hot and kicking out....when the A/C goes dead and the fan is still running ..go to the compressor hot wire lead with a test light and see if you have 12v there. If so probably needs a clutch

I had similar problem on my 94. Turned out to be the control unit in the car.

Hi
Sounds like the compressor is getting too hot, there is a temp sensor that some owners bypass. This gets it going.
There is also a gap issue with the compressor clutch, if it is too big then the clutch won't click in. It is adjustable but not straight forward.
If you were low on R143a then there would be a rapid cycle, click on click off. So I am guessing the clutch needs adjusting.

Could also be excessive moisture in system, this can cause freeze up and NO refrigerant flow until it gets hot and melts blockage.
Evacuate system,replace dryer,hold vacuum for 45 minutes-recharge.
Moisture in system is what causes the dreaded Evap failure. Refrigerant turns to an acid mix and eats out the core!
HTH.
