Hi all,

i feel like my auto tranny is nearing the end of its life its getting noisy and sometimes feel sluggish. the manual tranny swap would be ideal, but with a super busy summer coming up, i just dont feel up to it this year.

so..I have two options:

1. swap in a newer tranny. I see quite a few floating around on ebay and online. but some of them state that they are only for 1996 and newer 850s. if i were to look for a newer tranny to bolt in, is there a specific model i need to look for? My car ia 94 turbo.

2. rebuild the current tranny. Are there rebuild kits avaiable for my tranny? including torque converter? if so, where can i buy them and how much have tranny shops charged to do it?

thanks so much for any help!

also for rich and others:

the two main symptoms for the tranny:

1. when in drive, there is a cosntant, metalic chatty sound. when in neutral or park and just revving the engine, there is no such sound...so i figure its the tranny or the torque converter.

2. when letting off the throttle abruptly, the rpm drops very sharply, if at low speed, the tach will dip below 1k rpm, and then bounce up to 1.4 or so, if i do it really abruptly at low speed, this dip is accompanied by a light clunking sound.

so...is this a torque converter problem? or a tranny? or both? anyway, any help is welcome, planning to do a lot of driving int he summer, so i want her to be ready smile.gif

It sounds to me like it could be a torque convertor. They either fail completely (like a blown clutch) or pretty much lock up solid (bog central leaving a stop).

Having done a tranny replacement last year (not myself, but paid for it) I would go with rebuilding it (if it is still salvageable). The tranny on my car only had 107k miles when it went, and the replacement tranny came out of a '96 850 with 59k miles on it. I have no idea how that car was driven, nor the conditon of the tranny, but I didn't know any better at the time. If you get your tranny rebuilt, you can have it built with stronger internals and you will know that it is done right, and that the tranny will last.

In terms of rebuild kits/companies...I have no idea
