I have been driving my car only since I bought it two weeks ago. I just drove my wife's company car, a Ford Escape and noticed something about the Volvo.
You really have to put your foot down on the accelerator to get the car in motion. The Escape has a quick response and almost lurches forward.
Is there a reason our cars require more input from the pedal? Is it so we accelerate in a smoother fashion? Just curious.
I thought I remember reading that our cars won't give full throttle in 1st gear, is this true?

I think it's normal, my car does the same thing, maybe it's our small throttle bodies?

Don't know about the full throttle in first gear thing, but i'm 99% certain that the reason why the Escape lurches forward is because it has an ETB, while the R's still have fly-by-wire.

If you take the cover off of the throttle body, you can check and adjust the tension of your throttle cable. The cable sleeve screws into the bracket with plenty of thread for adjusting the tension. Make sure that you don't adjust it too far, otherwise the throttle won't completely close. Not sure it will make much of a difference, but worth a look.

I do notice that my 850 turbo has a less responsive pedal than my NA 850. It is also less responsive than many other cars i have driven, it does result in a smoother ride however.

ETB and fly by wire are one of the same ..fly by wire means electronically controlled

the turbo cars are known to have a "sling shot" effect when taking off....it's not extreme, but that's the best way I've heard it explained...my ST ECU actually made the effect ALOT less noticeable, except when I floor the pedal.

Thanks everyone, to those with chip/ECU upgrades, have you noticed a significant improvement/change?
