ok so we threw on some new generic pads from autozone in the rear of an 94' 850. and they squeal really bad when coming to a stop. the old pads did that really bad vibration when coming to a stop, tho the new pads do it also just not as bad. we were told to replace the rear rotors along w/ the pads but since my friend didn't have rotors @ the time and we wanted to see if the pads would make a difference but they just make all kinds of noise so what did i do wrong? i'm used to RWD bricks and never had this problem on them tho i always use good pads(mintex). tho he said w/ the new pads the brakes do feel a lot more solid as they are soft w/ the old pads.(aout 40% left)

so yea any tips or what not? we are gonna throw on the old pads to @ least get rid of the sound for now. i used grease on the back and he didn't get any shims for the rear as i know i need to order some asap so yea any other advice besides just throwing on the rears till we can get some shims and see if that stops the squeal w/ the new pads or just get some better pads? or get new rotors and see if it still does it?

With a 1994-1997 make sure you get the cut out shims for the rear. I haven't heard of much luck with after market pads, I only use OEM on my car. ( I know not fair I work at a dealer biggrin.gif )

Others maybe able to help with good after market pads. But your rotors are the cause of the vibration, you need to replace them.(with OEM of course) Or what ever others have tried and know they work. It's hard finding something better that works but some have done this.

Mike, I may have an extra set of shims which I can send you with the unit i'm sending back!

Rich: Which direction does the arrow face on the cut-out shims? Are they supposed to be mounted with the arrow pointing clockwise or counterclockwise?

The shim part goes on the top, so the missing part is on the bottom, not sure about the arrow, can't remember.

ok well lucky us i was digging around in my garage and found some rear pads and shims for my 740 and lucky us they were the same so we threw those on and all is well. so the mintex pads and teflon shims made it all better, still needs new rotors but eh later on

didn' cut them ... is there a reason to cut them??

my supplier who sells to dealers and what not(they also supply IPD w/ most of thier stuff haah) sells the teflon and the cut ones. and my guy recommeded the teflon over cut ones saying the dealers around here order those and almost all shops do and they have never had issues

so yea what's the reason for cutting them? wouldn't that make them press on the rotor a little uneven?

Helps to stop the vibration or resonance that can be caused. Like rubbing your finger around the wine glass to make it sing. Well the cut out shim makes the pressure just enough "uneven" that it stops the resonance that could be caused.

hm ... well we'll leave these in for now if they start to make noise again i'll cut them(all 5 mins to get the rear brakes off)

as they recommened just the teflon ones to stop the rear vibration so i'll talk w/ him again and see what he says but thanks for the tip/info

yea the ones back in cali would order them along w/ all the volvo only shops or @ least that's what i'm told. so whatever if it works i'm not gonna complain

the guy i used to get parts from was a good friend(doesn't work there anymore) and fellow volvo nut and he said the dealers used them so i trust him but even if it was a lie oh well as i know for a fact that most of the local shops ordered and used them w/o complaints(knew a couple of owners)

so was this just a design flaw form volvo that required the cut shims to fix or what?

Usually the arrow points in the direction that the disc is rotating when the car goes forward. So on the rear brakes of an 850, that would be up.
