How Much For T-belt, Water Pump And Therm

Looking for a rough estimate on how much I would have to pay for a indy shop to replace water pump and thermostat and put in new timing belt with parts and labor?

Also, so I need the tension pulley or is that absolutely necessary?

Thanks in advance... trying to budget and see how much I'll need.

thanks but also looking for labor on a job like this... I know timing belts and water pumps can be costly labor-wise, so just looking for total cost of parts/labor... I would do it myself, but I think it might be out of my scope. How much do you think parts and labor would be $300.. $400?

What is your current "comfort zone" working on your car? While I didn't to the water pump and thermostat when I recently changed my timing belt, it was the first time I had ever worked on a Volvo and the first time I'd done major work on a front wheel drive car. Changing the timing belt was much easier than I expected...thanks to the instructions here.

Changing the timing belt took me all of three hours, now that I've done it once it might take me 2 to 2.5 hours. The water pump should be quick and easy after the timing belt is out of the way. The thermostat should be simple once the coolant is drained.

I'm willing to bet with a free weekend and a decent set of tools you could do this work yourself and save the labor charge.

Why not do it yourself. I have done the timing belts on two '93 850's, an '95 850, and a '98 S70 T5. It realy is not a bad job. Check out the directions with photos on the Bay13 Volvo web site. An extra set of hands is very helpful, and definitely buy the tool from IPD (you need it to release the ensioner, and comes with good directions).

Do you realy need to replace your water pump or are you doing this as a precautionary measure? The reason I ask is that the newer style pully system seams to put very little stress on the pump. On either '93 (one of them now has bnearly 250,000 miles), nor the '95 (over 100,000 miles), or the '98 (also at 100,000 miles). I hav yet to have one fail. I noticed the same when I had a '84 740 Turbo Diesel. That car also had a serpine belt drive the water pump. On my older "red block" Volvos, I could count on needing a new water pump every 50K to 75K.

The thermostat is a breaze to replace. Just get the right size Torks bit. Also get yourself a new upper radiator hose. Those tend to get a bit brittle over time as it sees the highest temperatures.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I really have absolutely zero tools... I need to get some eventually but that makes these bigger jobs tougher because I'd have to go spend a hundred on the tools... I do plan on getting a nice tool set eventually.

The water pump has a slow leak, hence that repair, and my car has 123k, so while the pump is getting done it makes sense to go ahead and do the timing belt. I just want to get an idea of the total cost for this.

the local shop here said that it would cost $300.

I'd guess 3.5-4 hours labor rate. Plus what ever the parts cost.
