the local parts guy, who is volvo only (rpr in albany cali, a cool little shop for older volvos in particular), says his vovlo parts catalouge indicates t5r qnd r are different from 850 and he does not carry them. i thought all 850 brakes are the same. any help appreciated.

Nope, not all 850's brakes are the same.

Depends on the wheel size. Some came with 15" wheels and others with 16' and 17" wheels, especially the T5R.

but does the NA, T5 and R have the same rotor and caliper? or are you saying that THAT, depends on the rim size?

15" wheels use 280 mm rotors
16 and 17" wheels use 300 mm rotors.

The 16 and 17" wheels use a larger different caliper bracket to accept the larger rotors, but I believe the calipers are the same.

I just ordered new (rebuilt actually) calipers from FCP Groton. They came with pads and the caliper carrier bracket. So, if the new one arrives and doesn't match yours, just keep yours and send them back your old caliper core and the new bracket.

Not for 850s. They all use the 280mm rotors. Ok, I don't know about the 93 4 lug, but the later 850s all use 280, regardless of rim size. My stock rims are 17" and I only have 280mm rotors. Now, for 70 series, the change was made to 302 at some point, and it may be based on rim size, I don't know.

This whole thread could be caused by a misprint in a parts catalog. Since this guy does mostly older Volvo stuff, when he looked up parts it probably didn't specifically say T5-R or R, so he probably didn't know that it would work just fine. It could be the catalog didn't have "850 (all)", maybe it just had "850, 850 turbo".
You could order the parts and if they really are different, you could return them as long as they haven't been installed.

thanks for the info..

I took mine off and went to the parts store and compared them to the ones he had for 850 na and 850 turbos. they were all identical so i bought a set and they bolted up. his cataloug says t5r's and r's are different but it was an aftermaket rebuilders catalog and not a volvo catalog. I think you called it, he is not familiar with 850's, the catalog is wrong, and i agree with you...everthing i have read says all 850's have the same brakes, all of them being 280mm up front and whatever it is in the rears regardless of wheel size unless someone messed with it. (i know not of 93)

Even VADIS lists different PN's for R/T5-R calipers. This doesn't indicate whether the parts are *physically* different.

I believe that the T-5R calipers, when ordered from the dealer come pre-painted in black. I know this was the case with the rear calipers, not sure about the fronts.

There are also a number of different part numbers for front brake pads. Identical components may have different part numbers, and in some cases different prices (!)
