I got a code PO 440 - evaporative emissions malfunction. What is this ? Could a vacuum leak cause it? I had the CEL pop on and off for several days last week and it finally stayed on. Also, what is the difference between a hard code and a soft code?

Whats the year and model of the car. P0440 equates to a Volvo ECM 4008 Purge valve. The purge valve is not holding pressure when it should. We see these valves needing replacing all the time.

It's a '97 T-5 wagon with 103K. Is this a part I can replace myself and what part do I need? Is this code a fairly accurate diagnosis that this is the actual problem? Thanks, Rich.

It's pretty close to whats wrong. The Canister purge valve (known as the evap valve) is easy to replace. Remove the air duct that goes from the front of your car to the air box. The big green arrow points to the electricial connector for the valve.

Remove the valve electricial connector and the two vacuum lines, then use a small hand vacuum pump to make sure both ends of the valve hold vacuum, the one going to the tank more than likely won't.

Dear Mr. Volvospeed,

Didn't you used to have a whole page dedicated to the replacement of the evap valve? I thought I saw one somewhere, and was counting on it when I finally got the courage to try the repair myself!

Thanks for all you do,

replacing the purge valve is a simple remove and replace procedure once you know where it is.

The green arrow in the picture shows where the valve is located.
