I was wondering if someone knew what the typical service items would be at 140,000 on a 97 850. I believe the timing belt is on the list. What other items would be good to do at this time. Also, does the idler pully on the the timing belt need to be replace? I know this one has the hydralic type.

Thanks

No, i mean NA as in "naturally aspirated", you answered my question.

Has the car been serviced regularly?

Yes it has been to the dealer every 10,000. I have been doing the oil changes between those visits. I was thinking of doing the timing belt on it this time after reading the process on bay13 and seeing the little alignment tool that IPD sells.

At 140k I had:
timing belt
water pump
pullies
serpentine belt
tune-up (plugs and whatnot)

plus i needed front brakes & rotors and replaced a noisy power steering pump.

$2400 and one divorce later she runs like BFN!

So a waterpump is recommended too? I suppose if you are digging in to get the timing belt it might as well be replaced at that time.

I had my serpintine and timing belt done, only to later have my water pump go. The coolant leaked onto the serp belt, and snapped it. excl.gif I would do it all while the mechanic has everything apart.

Yes 140 is a T-belt and I would suggest a water pump as well maybe a tensioner pulley and a serp belt if needed. Thats really it wink.gif

75 dollars on ebay gets you a new water pump, gastket, and timing belt. I work at a parts store and I can't even beat that.

I had previously understood that the water pumps are good well beyond 200k (Bosch)... was I led astray?

Do the water pump and don't stress over it. A failed water pump will not do anything to prolong the life of your engine.

I would think that a going through and cleaning out the PCV system would be an excellent exercise at 140k. How about dropping the oil pan and checking the oil pickup and gaskets in there? Simple things that increase the stress on an older motor in day to day driving.

The manual spells it all out...I certainly wouldn't go dropping oil pan without good cause.

I would do:

T-belt (~$40)
Serp Belt(~$30)
T-belt tensioner(~$50)
Water pump(~$100)
Thermostat(~$10) You've already dumped coolant to replace pump....might as well and it's easy
New coolant(~$15)
New Spark Plugs ($30) (you probably need to take access cover off anyway...and it makes the timing belt work A TON easier when you have the plugs out to rotate the engine more freely)

Closely inspect the idler pulleys on timing belt and serp...replace if they spin like old roller skate wheels with no grease.

So you're out ~$250 bucks +/- and about 6 hours of work for a novice for a solid servicing for critical components and you get great piece-of-mind.

I'm not a pro in this area...so I may get vetoed here, but...I would not replace O2 sensor. Generally, they are fairly easy to replace (no major disassembly reqd), AND the engine monitor is usually pretty good about detecting when they stuff (if the monitor is like other cars I've had), AND even if it does start to stuff, it won't strand you anywhere before you can repair it...it will just run poorly until you replace it. So, I'd wait till it dies. Anyone with more expertise on engine monitor may have more educated opinion on this...
