I have a '95 850. Lately a few times I have noticed that after the car has been parked with the engine running when I go to take off there is a puff of bluish smoke right after I go forward(or backward). It doesn't do it while driving or when I start it, just after sitting still and running for a few minutes. Any ideas? Could it be related to my front o2 sensor which I very recently found to be in need of replacing? Thanks, Mike

blue smoke is / can be a telltale sign of worn rings / bad compression. I'd have a compression test done. How much oil is the car consuming?

It has been going through some oil but it also has an oil leak that I need to get checked out so I can't gauge if there is any oil usage due to the smoke issue. I have only had the car a few months so I'm not familiar with it's normal oil consumption rate. Mike

Would any of the above mentioned problems show up as codes on the diagnostic device under the hood? I'm a new first-time Volvo owner so please bear with my ignorance

Actually if it's a NA like I believe it is ...replace the flame trap ,clean the throttle housing and go from there ..that should fix ya' up
...very simple there is a write up in the R/M section on how to do so

It's a 850 turbo Mr. Winkey, I don't think it has a flame trap from what I understand. Thanks, Mike

I'd start by fixing your external oil leaks. Monitor your oil level every fill up at the gas pump. You will more than likely find that you are not using oil. Could be the head or the turbo. If it's not much I wouldn't worry about it. If I idle for a while then punch it I can get some smoke. Will be getting a new head and turbo in the next year.

The oil is leaking near the passenger side front tire. It was hard to see but i'd guess about a foot behind the oil filter but it could have been running down the underside of the car a little too. Any ideas?
About the blue smoke, there is just one quick puff after I put it in gear after the car has been idling for a few minutes. It never happens while driving or when I start it. It seems to be running no different than before. The check engine light is on but thats due to a bad O2 sensor that will be fixed soon. Would that have anything to do with it? Replace the O2 sensor, you could be a little rich, and that could be your smoke. The color thing of the smoke is often hard to make out.

Mike...ok you have a turbo ..the blue smoke coming from the exhast and your oil leaks could all be related to breather restriction however it could also be a faulty turbo. You could replace the oil trap/clean out the lines and see what happens. If your smoke is still there I'm guessing turbo related
