The congressman (Tom DeLay) likened their stay to being at camp and asked, ``Now tell me the truth boys, is this kind of fun?''

They nodded yes, but looked perplexed.

The government can't/won't do the right thing, so let's tell the people to laugh about the hellish predicament they find themselves in?

I put the stuff for smores in all our shipments there. If you guys wanna go its 10k a month tax free and they feed you and put you up. And you get to cook smores every night

No its what FEMA is paying now. A lot of my friends who thought they were made said screw it and went there to work. Its pissing FEMA off. Here are 100k people who made 12k a year before and have no homes yet are too good to work for 10k a month to save them selves. Even funnier is trained rescue teams are being told that every one is rescued. One case a fast water rescue team reported to be told everyone was recused already. The helo pilot pointed to a person in a high-rise not 300 meters off with a white flag and said what about him. LOL. Even better is the people there love Negin. Even though its mostly his fault and he moved to Dallas. LOL

Oh they have jobs if they want them. Oh and the jobs come with a place to stay..... actully they are tents. In a lot of way it is summer camp. 2k dirty guys, canned food, tents... sounds like summer camp to me. Grant get up on it jungle boogey

Anybody who thinks there's jobs and HOUSES for those refugees is smoking crack. Private residences for hundreds of thousands of people are still within the flood zone. They will be homeless and indigent until the water is gone.

It's easy for the simpleminded to make light of the situation. Whatever. Some of us care about America others care about protecting certain people due to party lines.

If you feel that way about these refugees, perhaps you feel the same way about those hurt by 9/11 or the tsunami.

Have you been there? Are your employees on CNN every night? Do you work with FEMA? We cannot find workers. I have offered several people here jobs down there and no one wants to go. 911 had no warning. 911 also was not a pig circus. Same for Sumatra... I am still pissed about the coffee situation. If you wanna eat smores, hug refugees, and be yet another talking head on CNN saying "OH poor me", than contact me and I will put you in the middle of it all. Other wise, your just another person with one hand out and the other shaking a finger and saying "Shame".

I've said it in other places, but if it weren't for school (or if I was ahead of schedule in school), I would try to find a way to get out there and see how I could help. Especially if I was making $10k a month.

Charles, I know a guy in the Merchant Marine who offered to help up there and couldn't find anyone who would take his help... This was about a week ago, but do you know anyone I should have him contact if he's still not able to find a place to pitch in?

My only point is the problem needs to be fixed. Calling it summer camp ain't gonna fix it. Blaming FEMA, Bush or the refugees themselves ain't gonna fix it.

Sorry, but I'm not the "poor me" kind of guy. Even if I were a resident of New Orleans before the hurricane I have other places I can go with no problem. The people who need help aren't folks like me. They're the working class whose jobs and houses are gone. Most folks like that don't have $100K laying around for that rainy (very rainy) day.

I sent smores and toys for the kiddies. What more do you want? I am probably heading back that way in the next day or two. So far I am taking mostly goggles, meal replacement shakes, c-rations, and decon solution. If anyone along the route has anything they want to donate contact me and I will see about either coming by and getting it or having a truck sent out.

All the homeless people in LA are filling up local hurricane refugee centers. Then the refugees bee-itch about how the government doesn't provide space for them.

Too many people are taking advantage of a bad situation.

Nobody asked to have their houses and livelihoods washed away. These people need residences (with kitchens, bedrooms and furniture) and subsistence in the meantime. Call them whatever you want. The fact remains that these refugees did not cause the hurricane.

Go ahead, keep making light of the situation. I'm sure yours and DeLay's "caring" attitudes will perpetuate this "third world" treatment of the problem.

However, I'm also a patriot who believes that we pay billions in taxes so that our gov't is equipped to take care of dire situations such as this one. There are no excuses for American people displaced by disaster to endure third world living conditions.

There's only so much the government can do. Bureaucratic immobility has ruined a lot of the relief efforts, especially early on. Nobody was seriously ready for this, and if you think that the bulk of these people are going to get houses with kitchens, bedrooms, and furniture, you need to wake up. It's just not realistic.

It's a tragedy because it's tragic what has happened and is happening, and it's of such a large scale that teh government can't just fix everything with a wave of their hand. The summer camp comment was in bad taste, but the pressure on them is probably beyond what you and I can imagine. I've said some stupid things in high pressure situations before, that doesn't mean I'm going straight to hell for it.

It's very easy to be critical of others and how they deal with this situation, especially when they are under the lime light and in our living rooms dealing with it from moment-to-moment, but placed in the same situation, we probably wouldn't do so well either.

Wow you have lost your mind. You think they are being treated like a 3rd world country. Have you ever lived in a 3rd world country? Trust me they are fine. In a third world country they would have recieved no warning, and a lot more would be wiped out. The ones who made it would be left to fend for themselves, which they would quite fine, until the US or another watch dog group came to the rescue. The federal gov is there to protect you and give you the chance to survive. Prospering was never in its outline.
