Not sure if this is repair related or cosmetic; Moderators use your wisdom and move if appropriate.

Is the black paint on a 94 850 single stage or base/clear?

I've heard that the non-metallic colors were single stage.

Anyone have a good/cheap source for paint? I only want like a pint or a quart of Volvo Black.

Thanks!

Go to www.paintscratch.com. They let you order paint via the paint code on your car, model and year. I have used them twice and the service and product are excellent. Plus, you can get the paint in spray cans if needed.

I have no idea for sure, but Im guessing base + clear. I only say this b/c when I polish my 850, there is no hint of black on my cloth. If its only single stage, shouldn't some color come off on the rag?

My roof leaves the rag black, but not really the rest of the car. Makes me wonder if there was a repaint in her past.

Thanks for the link GreenMachine!

Wow! 80 bucks for a pint of black paint??? blink.gif

I've never bought auto paint before... Does anyone know if that's normal?

I may have to shop locally.

Check iPd! 1 pt should be 2 of their cans, you're only looking at like $30...

I'm hoping to buy in liquid form.

I have some painting I want to do like handles and maybe trim, but I also want to mix some up for tinting my tail lights.

$80 for a pint isn't unusual. You also have to keep in mind you need other materiels like hardener and reducer.

You can probably look in your yellow pages for a local AUTOMOTIVE paint store and get the paint locally. All paint companies worth their salt can match paint via the paint code. If you want to get real fancy, you can take in something like your gas cap cover and they can run a color match off of that. That way if you lost a little color over the years, it will still match.

Some name brand paints are PPG and Sherman Williams.

If you have a NAPA in your area, some of them sell NAPA paint. Again they can match with your paint code, and the one in my town has the ability to color match.

You will need a paint sprayer and some skill to apply this properly.

It sounds like what you may want is something called BUMPER BLACK. It is a can of black spray paint for plastic bumpers. You can buy it at any Autoparts store or walmart.

If you paint all your bumpers and door handles, then they will all match and no one will know if you used Volvo Black or Black Black. (Eventually you would do that anyways, because you just can't compare newly painted bumpers to bumpers that didn't look "too bad."

And.. In case anyone was wondering.. Corvette Red and Viper red are the same color (according to the color analyzer at NAPA)

I was looking on there, for mine, color code 189, it says just white, nothing about clearcoat. Do I not have a clearcoat??
