Yesterday I removed the instrument cluster in my '98 V70 to remove the pesky service light reminder.

I read bay 13's directions and let me tell you that the V70 is a little different.

There is a screw hidden under the top dash speaker grille on each side. I removed a total of 11 screws to remove the whole dash, but I swear there was one screw in the middle that I couldn't see, and I was unable to remove the top dash. I was able to take the cluster by bowing out the drivers side but it was very tight.

Has anybody actually removed the whole top dash on a '98 70 series. How do I get to that hidden screw. Do I need to remove the glove bax to access some hidden screw?

I would appreciate your help as I need to do it again, and I rather remove the top dash.

Thank you

I had the exactly same problem. There must be some screws I couldn't see. I also had 11 screws removed and just couldn't take the dash board out. It's near the passenger side. I was thinking if the air bag caused this or not? Will the air bag deploy if I did soemthing wrong in that area?

How did you remove the cluster? I also bow the dash a little but that still not enough space for me to remove the cluster? I'm afraid to break the dash in to 2 pieces.

I had a helper lift and bow up the dash on the drivers side to remove the cluster.

Like I said before, it was very tight, and I rather do it the easier way next time, removing the whole upper dash.

I know someone out there in volvoworld has removed the upper dash on a '98-'00 70 series. Please share how to remove it completely. where is that hidden screw in the middle of the dash hiding? how do we get to it?

Yes. the glove box has to come out, then unbolt the airbag from the lower dash section and unplug the bag conector. The bag is mounted with 3 bolts. If all you are doing is the cluster for lamp replacement etc, you can leave the bag conected and just pull the top dash back from the drivers side and rest it on the steering wheel.

Guest_doc,

thanks a lot for sharing.

I do not plan to mess with the airbag connector, just to loosen the upper dash. So, if I understand you correctly, loosening the 3 bolts that secure the air bag should free the upper dash, right?. Should I disconnect the battery? unsure.gif

I got the top cover off, but only with considerable difficulty.

On my 1998 S70, the passenger side air bag is held in by three bolts: two that can be removed with the correct socket (10 mm?). The third bolt is a stud bolt. I did not have a stud bolt remover, so I cut it with a small piece of a hacksaw blade and eventually replaced it with a bolt just like the other two.

The passenger side airbag is attached to the top cover. When you take the top cover off, the airbag will come with it so you will have to disconnect the airbag at its wiring connector behind the glove box.

Well it's been pretty much covered. I very rarely take the top dash pad off. I take the entire dash out to do the evaporator, but haven't had to do just the dash pad, the key is the air bag bolts on the other side of the glove box. You already covered the one by the dash speakers.
