My daughter tells me her car is a mess, shakes a lot, black smoke from the tail pipe, severe loss of power and flashing check engine light to boot.
I was able to isolate the problem to #2 cyl. Plugs looked clean but I installed a new set of Volvo plugs I had for my wife's 98 V70.
Problem got worse. #2 Cyl is no longer alive now. I can hear the injector clicking normally so I borrowed the ignition wires and dist. cap from my wife's 98 V70 (this happens to be my diagnostic tool)
All my problems went away.
Upon closer inspection I found a hole in the plastic insulation of the ignition wire at the point where the top of the spark plug would sit. The spark burned a hole right through the insulation.
Is this helps somebody else, you may save yourself some headache.

Good find.
The cap, rotor, and wires are not called out to be replaced on any maintenance schecule. I've found that 50-60K for the cap and rotor and 100K on the wires, help to keep those weird problems that can show up from happening.
