Hi everyone. I am new to the site and was wondering if the battery drain problem is common on the 850's? I have had the battery and alternator checked out, and both work fine. I spent a few bucks on a tester and pulled a few fuses, and it looks like the problem lies with the central locking system.
Has anyone had problems with the CLS? Any recommendations on repairing for do-it yourselfer's? This problem is driving me nuts!

so you're sure it can't be a random light on somewhere, say the glove box.. or a improperly installed accessory?

I don't know the first thing about CLS and why it might be draining your system. I can tell you I have a similar problem on another one of my cars that usually sees only weekend duty. I would not even attempt begin to try to trace where the drain on the system is on that car.

My solution was to hook the car up to a battery maintainer like this one:

http://www.batterychargers.com/details.cfm...D1562A&catid=18

It comes with a pigtail lead with a plug on the end of it that you permanently connect to the battery. If you know the car is going to sit for a while, just throw the charger on it and plug it in. Takes two seconds to hook up.

Of course, if you don't have the car in a garage with electricity this is not going to work for you. That being said, I think there's a similar device that is solar powered that might be better if that's the case.

CLS? When the car is locked or unlocked, the actuator motors runs for 2-3 seconds. In my 850, I can actaually hear the motors runs, strains because it's reached the end of it's travel, then shuts off. Go and listen at every door, gas cover and trunk that this is hapening. I've replaced a couple of actuators in a 93-850 where the motors have burned out due to some reason didn't stop. If this happened to you, you should have some burned out motors by now.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the replies. I will try to answer every one, or at least the one's I can remember at the moment.
The car has a new battery; which wasn't cheap. I even took the car to have the new battery checked out, and have the alternator checked. They both were o.k. So I took someone's recomendation and purchased a tester (looks like an icepick with a wire attached)and proceeded to check each circuit breaker while the ignition was off to see where a current drain was coming from. Number 6, the Central Locking, lit the tester brightly. In addition, number 15, Courtesy lamps, Diagnostics, Door warning lamps (remote keyless entry), and glove compartment lamp, also lit up, but was rather weak when compared to the Central Locking circuit.
The car is a stock 1997 850 non-turbo model. It is a great car with 87,000 miles. Any suggestions anyone? I would like to fix the problem without having to disconnect the CLS or possibly permantly disabling the alarm system.

Not sure if this will help anyone but I had a battery drain issue--went thorugh 5 batteries in two years--just kept traing them in at walmart with no extra cash out of pocket. I eventually got tired of the problem an paid my mechaninc about $100 to figure it out--it took him a few hours but it was a short in the power sunroof that was draining the battery if the car sat for more than 3 days without running. It was big bucks to replace the motor so he just disconnected the wires and now no more drainage issues.
