Greetings,
I called my local Volvo dealer regarding their thoughts on changing the transmission fluid. First they said there is no real time frame that they recommend. When it starts to turn brown or smell burnt than that's when they change it. I'd rather change every 24,000 or so miles as others on this forum have suggested.
For $199.00 they'll do a transmission flush, fill with the DexronŽ III fluid. I'm told that this particular model year can't use Synthetic of any type. Is this really true? They went on to state that starting in 2001 Volvo started using the Syntheic fluid and that a flush, fill on those cars would be roughly $400.00
Is the dealer correct? My manual does state the transmission uses DexronŽ III ad needs 7.9 qts. There is no mention of Synthetic as an optional fluid.
Being a certified vehicle I definitely don't want to void out my warranty. Perhaps since I'd like to change every 24,000 miles it doesn't really matter if I use synthetic or not? Any thoughts....
Thanks!

I know some of the newer Volvos use fluid that is not avaliable from other markets (ie no suggested standard such as Dexron)III. Not sure about your model.
If you have Dexron III now, then there is no reason why you can't use a synthetic version of it.
I have heard of a lot of people with 850s (different transmission) who are told by dealers that synthetic will not work. This is absolutely not true (at least on the 850/70 series).

The S80 has a General Motors (GM) transmission. (Tweeked for Volvo) The fluid requirement is for Dexron III (I think there is a GM pat. on Dexron III).
Any fluid that meets or exceed the specs of Dexron III can be used in your transmission. (and won't void the warranty)
What ever synthetic you are thinking about, more than likely exceeds the specs.

I'm sure it eats at their craw, knowing that every S80 with a six cylinder has a GM transmission. There could be plans in the works to get rid of the GM, but it's been around from 1999 to present so, thats a lot of parts support. Etc.

I filled mine with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (which exceedes Dexron III specifications), and have had no trouble.
The dealer might not want to do it because it goes against factory specification, but there's no legitimate reason not to.
You could always do it yourself, if you're so inclined. I flushed mine for a total cost of about $120 (with the fluid and everything).
