All of a sudden I've been getting a strange noise from under the hood. Either it started recently, or I never noticed it before. It occurs about half of the times that I turn off the car. Something in the passenger side of the engine bay spins up and runs for about ten seconds, and then it spins down. It produces a somewhat high-pitched whirring noise. Any ideas?

If you have headlight wipers, I'll bet it is one or both of them. When mine went out, I heard the same thing until I disconnected them. The motor in one or both of them was spinning even though I wasn't engaging them.

and those headlight wiper motors are expensive to get fix. It's best to just leave them disconnected.
