Floor is done!

They are still vacuuming up dust and painting the base board, but yeah..

Profile of the floor where the bathroom meets the hallway, there will be a maple step (they should've raised the bathroom floor, but whatever).

You can see the 2cm of maple, then the 10cm of plywood. It is clearly solid maple since the knot goes all the way through to the bottom. The black gap is where the foam is. Then you see a 1/4" piece of plywood, another 3/4" piece that is glued to the tar membrane and then the concrete.

Some of the planks have these neato swrils. My buddy who does floors said that if we were to buy the whole floor like that it would run like $15/sqft because the swirly part is only found in a little part of the tree.

Ah yes, water spills... those WILL seep through, since the entire floor is not finished as a whole.

It feels relatively solid, even though it's floating. It does move here and there, but not enough that you will notice or care. Plus, once furniture is on, it should be more solid.. right? lol.

That's cool, so there's now bounce to it?

Well, I've never had a floating floor before. The upstairs is solid 3/4" floor nailed to plywood (or whatever they used in the 30s). It does bounce a tiny bit, but definitely not enough to upset me or anyone else. 3/4" hardwood would've been more solid feeling, without a doubt, but we got a stupidly good deal on this engineered floor. Plus we've had bad experiences with floor finishers. The upstairs kitchen (and all the rooms actually) were refinished and in many places you can see how screwed up it is. Overall, we're happy.

I like your bathroom tile and it going all the way up. I didn't do that against the wishes of my architect. Looks nice- and in SF no less. I've heard you guys pay four times as much for drywall work there than in LA, at least that's what my drywaller said.

What did you seal your bathroom tile with, it looks like a travertine?

And that edge shot of the floor into the bathroom looks like plywood on the bottom under the foam.. And no, floating floors do not "float" as in bounce, they just aren't nailed down. And with all those layers of wood floor and sub floor, should be nice and solid- and quiet.

And you aren't putting any wood directly on concrete are you? It's a bit hard to tell.

I doubt he'll get any "bounce" over a concrete floor. Now, floated lam-wood floor over TGIs w/long spans like in my house and my kids have fun bouncing around like they are in some fun house. wink.gif

Love the work you did, Serge!

I hope your buddy put down a plastic vapor barrier membrane over the concrete before the wood went down. That floor will not last five years without it, I can guarantee that.
