I have the check engine light up on the dash. The diagnostic tool shows the following fault "FET 232 - Long Term F/F Trim Idling". I believe this is fuel trim. I recently replaced the MAF sensor. Can anyone throw some light on possible causes.

I have a 1997 V70 XC AWD Turbo 2.5 L. Built October. I am in Sydney Australia. There were very few of these sold here and I cannot believe how the local Volvo dealers charge and how many things go wrong with these Belgium built cars. Pity I disn't visit these Forums to read about the issues before I became a frustrated owner - however I thank you guys for your help

Thanks for yuor help. I actually knew of Bay 13. The answer had been under my nose all along and I eventually found the section you suggested last night. Then I did a tap dance round the lounge room. The issue was that Bay13 is not simple to search and google couldn't find a 232 fault on the web

I have checked extensively for leaks and cannot find anyhting. Is it possible it is the front Oxygen sensor. Upon testing it does not seem to be outputting anything.
If so where are you best to buy one

Robert - I've had the same persistent problem with a 2-3-2 code set. Replaced both O2 sensors thinking, 1) they might be the problem, and 2.) they were long overdue to be replaced anyhow. $300.00 later did it make any difference in the 2-3-2 code being set? No. You might want to check Alvin's reply to a message I posted on the same subject a couple days ago: he made some pretty detailed suggestions about where to look for vacuum leaks.

Thanks for the response. Did the advice you received eliminate the fault. I had the MAF sensor replaced recently and checked all the elbows etc Bay 13 suggested to inspect. The car is running fine - no misfire, rough or exhaust fiumes.
Where else from here. Does Alvin have any pictures to guide the blind man

Tracking Down Engine Vacuum Lines

Do you think there is any chance that the fault code that is being displayed is simply a faulty O2 sensor prior to the catalytic converter

It is possible.
You say the O2 sensor is not ouputting anything? How did you test this?

I connected an OBII scanner to the car. I then reset the check engine light. With the OBII scanner (Non volvo genuine) you can read the live data from the sensors. Last time I checked it the O2 sensor was not outputting any voltages however I reset the light again the other day and could see the O2 sensors outputting a varying signal. I then drove the car for 2 days and the check engine light re appeared along with the tracs and abs lights. The tracs and abs lights have since gone off again but the Check enginbe light remains on. The car drives normally and fuel consumption seems normal

Would it be possible for you to get a vacuum/boost gauge somehow? You don't need it permanently but just to diagnose in this case. With a little rubber hose or something to it and plug it in to one of the ports on your vacuum tree that's currently capped off. And check your vacuum pressure. It should be at least -18ish at idle to be fair. I was down at about -12 and i was getting 232's. There are elbows and other rubber hoses all over the place that I find everytime I'm looking at the car.
