I'm looking to replace my aging Michelin MXV4+ tires with a set of new ones
i'm hoping for a wider tire than the stock 195/60/15 size.

i'm wondering what the maximum tire width/size for a 15" rim would be without getting any rubbing
i know a lot of you don't have experience with 15" rims, but in theory, would it still be the same?

thanks

Kendall has 205/55/15s and has had then several with no problems. From driving her car thats about as wide aw I would go with stock rims.

how do all you 17+ inch people get like crazy widths like 235 to work?
sure i've read that you get some rubbing on full wheel steering, but i think that i should be able to hit maybe 215 or something

Problem is not rubbing its the width of the stock rim. If you went to aftermarket rims you could go out to 225 no problem

so you mean that because the stock rims are too wide, the tire will rub
but with aftermarket and some wheel spacers, they wont?

and will i notice a big handling gain if i went with 205's?

No, 225 is too wide of a tire for the narrow stock rim.

205/55's will make a huge difference, especially if yoy buy decent ones. 215/55 would work but they dont relaly make many of those at all(if any) and 225 is way too big. 205/55 is ideal for the rim size.

The improvement from a 195 to a 205 would depend much much more on the kind of tire than the tire size, as well as the benefits of a shorter (55) sidewall. When I bought my T-5R the OEM 17s were gone but after I replaced the FIFTEEN inch 195s with a 205-55-16 AVS 100, the improvement was great...a result of the soft AVS, not so much the size change. BTW the 100s lasted 16K mi and couple weeks ago I went to the new Kumho Ecsta ACX.

i was thinking maybe the kumho 711/712 or the yokohama avs. a lot of people seem to have these. what concerns me the most (and probably a lot of others) is traction and treadwear.

Can only tell you about the AVA 100s = terrific dry and rain traction. Near zero snow/ice traction (OK, zero) but Yoko does not say they are snow tires or anything close. As I said I got 16k mi. You can find wear range for all tires at tirerack.com, as well as revs per mi, diameter, tread width, etc. Great site. All 205-50-16s for example are not the same size. Check it out...

What about 225/45/16 on 16X7.5 40mm rims? would that rub on a non lowered suspension?

Or would 205/50/16 be too wide on 16X7.5 rims?

Both those should work no problem

I have 205/50/15's Khumo 712's right now and they are a huge improvement over the 195/60's that were on the car before. The ride is not as cushy as before, but the handling response and cornering abilty of the car was greatly enhanced.

If you are looking for something in between, go with the 205/55's. I certainly agree that a 225 is pushing the width for a 6.5" wheel. Although I have installed 225's on a 6" wheel and they looked funny. I also think that any perfomance increase gained from the wider tire was lost because of an improper fit.

I also have a set of the 711's on my Porsche. Because it is an H Rated tire the sidewalls are not as stiff as the 712's. Thefore it is a mushier tire although it has a more agressive dry handling tread pattern.

I think either the 711 or the 712 will be a good tire choice.

Are the Khumos good in ice and snow? I see the price is right!
