I am at a loss as to what might be causing my problem, and hoping for some insight before I trek off to the dealer with an open wallet.

Last week, car made a slight 'thumping' noise from underneath, esp. on bumpy roads - I thought it might be one of the hangers for the exhaust system had gone again, and I was getting some sway and the pipe was banging. Today, the car begins to make a very serious grinding sort of noise - coming from up front. Its cyclic, so when at idle the grinding noise comes and goes as the RPMs shift slightly. On acceleration, it gets very loud (and you can feel it in the pedal as well) for a brieft moment until the RPM's increase, and then it is gone - until you come to the next red light.

Anyone have any thoughts? By waiting to fix what I think are the hangers did something else loosen up? Love to have some idea before I get into the dealership...

Also on that note, I am about 30 minutes west of Boston - my company moved me here so I don't know the area very well. Anyone have a good non-dealer Volvo mech they can recommend?

[A side note, the car just rolled 99K, has been a great car all around, and after reading some of the posts, I see that it's not just mine that has had problems with the TRACS/ABS lights, bubbling door panel, etc. I have had the TRACS/ABS module replaced three times over the last three years.]

Thanks in advance

look at the front (actually right side) engine mount. it is a lump of rubber and metal that holds the engine off the subframe. the rubber broke and caused the same symptoms on my XC.

its a pretty easy fix, there are instructions in the repairs section of this site.

hint: its behind the passenger side front fender lining.

Welcome to Metro West. I use an Indy in Natick, Mike Andrews at Foreign Car Care - 508-655-1380. Used him for past 15++ years as my exclusive mechanic on lots of Volvo's. He is solely Volvo, and a great resource. Also walking distance to train to Boston.

Farrell Volvo was doing the work - always under warranty and after the idiot light on the dash came on. I have had it replaced each of the last three years. This year (fingers crossed) not yet...

Once I find a decent indy I won't be going back...

Perfect. I am right up the hill from him then. Thanks! I will give him a call in the future!

NB: Now, according to the dealer, it also needs a power steering pump and a new alternator. As with the TRACS/ABS modules, this will be the third one... mad.gif
