A friend of mine wants to give me his old Sunfish sailboat. The hull weighs about 120 lbs. I have a Yakima roof rack that I frequently use on my 850 wagon. What is the roof weight capacity for Volvos? Can the roof (using the correct Yakima fittings for the Volvo) take a 150 lb or so load?

Thanks.

The Thule rack (same as OEM Volvo) I have on my 855 came with warnings to not to place a load exceeding 165 pounds on the load bearing rails. There might be a conservative margin for safety with that weight.

You can probably check the Yakima website for their load restrictions.

Some of the stories on the forums describe accidents where the car/wagon ended flipped over with the entire weight of the car resting securely on the roof rails with no collapsing, but then there's always the other pictures of the guy that overloaded and killed his suspension system or forgot to secure something and ended up jettisoning the load on the highway.

Hiya
150lbs should be fine. Just be careful when you drive - it raises the car's center of gravity quite a lot, with increased body roll and worse handling tup.gif

The Yakima racks are rated the same 165lbs that the Thule racks are. The rack will be fine, I cannot comment on the roof of the car...I have no idea.

Keep in mind that it's not going to be fun getting the thing on and off of there and you risk messin' up both the brick and the boat....

Why not just pick up a small trailer? A decent used single jetski trailer can be had for under $200...

i think my OEM rack holds 220 lbs. i'd rent a trailer from UHaul or something though.
